Hi, I"m brand new to Plex and was really excited about getting started. I downloaded the Plex server, app, but whenever i hit launch, or try to open the program, nothing happens. I’ve uninstalled it a couple of times, but nothing works. Would appreciate any help.
I guess I did not give much info. I’m on a Windows 10 computer. I don’t know witch version of Plex I’m using since nothing launches, but it’s the latest version, downloaded today.
#1/ downloaded from where?
#2/ are you talking about the installer not running or nothing showing after you installed the Plex Media Server?
#2b/ if we talk about the latter… when you “run” Plex… do you get to see the Plex icon in Windows’ task tray?
I downloaded it from the Plex website. The installer ran fine, or seemed to, but when I hit “launch”, nothing happened. Then I went to the start tray and it was there, but when I click on it there, nothing happens. I checked the windows folder and found it there, but it still wouldn’t launch. I checked in the Task Manager. It does not show it running. Appreciate your help.
try opening it directly in your browser by entering 127.0.0.1:32400/web (127.0.0.1 refers to your own machine; if you try opening this page from a different machine you’ll have to use the IP address of the machine hosting the Plex Media Server).
OK, when I go in that way it shows what must be my desktop. (I’m not really sure what I should be seeing). Since I’m not able to open Plex Server on my computer, it hasn’t scanned my hard drives for content or anything like that.
OK, I’ve done some more reading, as I should have done before asking for help. I was expecting a window to open with directions, etc… I really apologize for wasting your time, and I appreciate your help. Thanks very much!!!
I am having the same issue here. I am on a Lenovo PC laptop. Windows 8.1, 64 bit. Please help!
For starters… have you tried opening Plex in your browser as described above?
i think i have but i’ll try again. what address should i use? thanks
and i chrome ok to use?
tried address above with no luck.
Address depends on where you have installed the Plex Media Server:
- If you have installed it on the same machine where you open the browser, https://127.0.0.1:32400/web is the right address – if it doesn’t open Plex related page, you need to verify that the Plex Media Server is actually running (check for the Plex icon in Window’s task tray)
- If you have the Plex Media Server installed on a different machine in your home network or on a NAS, you’ll need to use the local IP address of that machine/NAS (e.g. https://192.168.178.5:32400/web – if the local IP of the machine is 192.168.178.5)
would not open and server was not running on task bar
Sounds like the server wasn’t even started in your case.
Can you run the Plex Media Server
app from the Windows start menu? When you do, it should show up in the task tray — then you’ll be able to connect using the URL above.
If Plex won’t start, please check out the Plex log folder and provide the Plex Media Server.log
file. You can find them using this support article:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/ (section „Manually Finding Log Files“)
Windows
On Windows, the log files are located inside of the user directory.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Logs
Should i paste the log files here? If so how many? I see 8 separate logs.
Just this one:
I have a PLex Media Player log but not a Plex Media Server log. Are these the same?
They’re different.
The Plex environment consists of a server which manages the content (Plex Media Server) and one or more clients for playback of your media on a certain device.
There are clients for all kinds of devices ranging from mobiles, various smart TVs and set-top-boxes, as well as for regular computers (the latter is „Plex Media Player“).
Which brings me to the question… do you have a Plex Media Server installed on this computer?
Just trying to rule out you accidentally downloaded and installed the player only… you wouldn’t be the first and won’t be the last to whom this happened.
The Plex download page (https://www.plex.tv/downloads or https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads) offers both:
- Plex Media Server:
Media Server Downloads | Plex Media Server for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and More - Plex Media Player:
Media Server Downloads | Plex Media Server for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and More
Can you double-check which one you got installed?
This is what I have downloaded multiple times:
Plex-Media-Server-1.14.1.5488-cc260c476
Question: Does it matter that this pulls to my external hard drive and then when I go to download it it goes to my C drive? Thanks for all your help by the way!!
