Player Version#:I using the Plex Web app Version 4.40.1. Don’t know what my PMS or Player Versions are because they don’t open after the latest update. When I try to open the PMS app I get this error message: The application “Plex Media Server” can’t be opened.
When I try to access my server from the web app using the “Plex it” button I get this: Unable to connect Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at 127.0.0.1:32400.
I have tried everything Plex suggests uninstalling and reinstalling all elements of Plex following these instructions from Plex and still no joy. My server still doesn’t show up in the list of “authorized devices” so there’s no way to connect to it.
Using the Finder’s “Go” menu, select Go To Folder… then enter the following in the dialog box that pops up:
~/Library/
Browse to and delete the following files and folders:
~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/
~/Library/Caches/PlexMediaServer/
~/Library/Logs/Plex Media Server/
Open your “Terminal” application and then run the following command:
defaults delete com.plexapp.plexmediaserver
Delete the actual application itself under /Applications/Plex Media Server.app
Restart your computer to clear out any cached Plex Media Server preferences.
I have been at this for three days now and don’t know what else to try so any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
This is an update: Following more instructions from Plex to address this problem I also did the following:
macOS
Quit/exit your Plex Media Server, so it’s not actively running
Open the macOS “Terminal”application
Run the following individual commands in Terminal
defaults delete com.plexapp.plexmediaserver PlexOnlineHome
defaults delete com.plexapp.plexmediaserver PlexOnlineMail
defaults delete com.plexapp.plexmediaserver PlexOnlineToken
defaults delete com.plexapp.plexmediaserver PlexOnlineUsername
All those items were showing as already deleted when performed those tasks in terminal. So the new downloaded PMS that won’t launch has not and cannot recreat those files. Does that have something to do with this error message? : ‘The application “Plex Media Server” can’t be opened.’
Since first posting this message I updated my Mac to The Catalina OS in the hopes that it would make a difference but no such luck. Still unable to get PMS to open or for the Plex Web app to see my server. I’ve been Plex Pass holder now for three years and I could really use some help.

After three days of frustration trying every suggestion I could find on these forums PROBLEM SOLVED! I found the solution by doing a generic search of the issue: 'App on mac won’t open – error message “The application ’ – ’ can’t be opened” and found this Youtube video that fixed the problem. If I could kiss the guy who made it, I would, Covid be damned. I discovered that this WASN’T A PLEX PROBLEM. IT WAS A MACOS PROBLEM. I don’t know how but the path to launch the Plex app had somehow been corrupted and this video showed me how to, very easily, fix it in the Terminal app. The video is below.
