So I put all eight seasons of the show House on my hard drive. It got the metadata for season one, but nothing for seasons 2-8. All of the file names are in the same format as season one, so I don’t see why the formatting of the names should be an issue. Tried refreshing everything. Tried screwing with the order of agents. The amount of time I have wasted trying to figure this out is becoming absurd now. I’m using web client 3.83.1.
Okay, so all seasons but season 7 now have full metadata. What.
It doesn’t matter if the file name format is wrong.
TV show naming in Plex:
Preparation
(this is to prevent embedded metadata in mp4/m4v files from messing up the matching or overriding Plex’s metadata with nonsense)
Go to
- Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
- Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
- Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
- Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
The crux of the biscuit
- Look up your show on TheTVDB
- Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like
§ : % *
, simply leave them out. - Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases. Add the (year) in parentheses of when episode 1 of season 1 of this show was aired.
- Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder.
Show's Title (year) - s01e01 - additional info.ext
(‘- additional info’ can be left out) - After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.
or use a program such as name my tv series free windows old but works application
or filebot to do a match to either tv or movie if filebot then rename the files.
If Tv show Follow the naming suggestions for Show>Season and separate files as required.
If Movie Copy the file name to a new folder Move the file into that folder then into a Movie Folder that plex uses for the library.
Do all this out side of the normal Plex library Folders for Tv and Movie… move files into your plex library folder and Plex dance should not be needed.
in my case i have my Plex movies and Movie shows in :\Plex\Movie\Movie Name (year)
i have my TV shows in :\plex\TV\Tv Series name (year)\Season # as needed
i use Movie for the library and TV for the library and Plex for my download location for my renaming. then simple Drop into Movie or TV as needed and use Plex as the master location for New files pending download. use the apps suggested above and move as needed
