TV episode title wrong in metadata, Plex not refreshing with updated title

I recently added my tv show library into plex. I just noticed that some of the metadata titles had generic DVD ripping names (like Show_Name_S1D1) even though the filename was correct. I went in and updated the metadata for the file, but Plex is still showing that generic name even after I refreshed the show. Did I miss a step?

Edit: Not sure how to delete this thread, but it’s fixed now. It just took a while to refresh the whole season.

Do also check if youur files are in mp4/m4v format.
If they are, they could contain internal metadata which can potentially throw off Plex’s scanners.
To avoid such troubles, go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows -TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack active agents.

Thank you! I just did that.

I also noticed there is still a bit of an issue where the show name that I had corrected (since I just copied the file name to the tag) is “Show.Name.S01E01-Episode Title.” The ones that have the title named correctly just have the episode title as the episode name. Will this change fix all those, or do I still have to manually update those tags in the file?

You should name all your files the way Plex requires them and then rescan the library.

My change does not change your files.
It merely makes Plex to override the embedded info with downloaded info from TheTVDB.
So while the internal Plex database will have correct info, your files will still have incorrect embedded metadata.

You have to correct these yourself or simply erase them.

And I forgot: after you re-arrange the agent’s order, you must perform the Plex Dance so the previous gibberish from the metatags gets thrown out of Plex’s database.

Is wrong

Show Name - S01E01 - Episode Title
Is right.

No. What is listed on thetvdb.com is right.

What is your point?
Although Plex uses TheTVDB as a datasource, it uses its own naming format for file names,
which is documented here https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows
@JuiceWSA cited it correctly.

This worked! Been trying various other security settings for files in Windows itself. Of course it’s something that can be fixed easily in Plex itself. Thnank you so much for this!

Before even ever using Plex, I have ALWAYS named all my shows TITLE - SXXEXX…yet Plex thinks every single file is an episodes of The Preston Episodes…and none of the files I think will play do…
