Plex Metadata Issues For TV Show

I have acquired some media that has the wrong information within it.

It is a commercially available show (Kids In The Hall).

How can I force Plex to use the metadata from the Internet and not the local file information?

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards ‘Refresh Metadata’ on the whole show.

Consider removing or correcting the wrong metadata.

If using Windows, right click on the file, select properties, Details tab, Remove Properties and Personal Information. You can then choose what to remove or to create a copy with all information removed.

You can also use tools such as MKVToolNix’s Header Editor (multiplatform, mkv container) or Subler (Mac, mp4 container) to remove or correct the info. Subler can query online sources such as TVDB to retrieve metadata for movies & shows.

So once I delete the titles do I just do a refresh in Plex?

You should Plex Dance the titles after cleaning up any metadata issues.

Also, make sure you follow Plex’s recommended naming & directory guidelines. Plex can be picky about names, especially with TV shows. Following the guidelines helps Plex when matching against TVDB, etc.

See the Media Preparation documents. Specifically, Naming ‘Series’ & ‘Season’ Based TV Shows.
