ok i have Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways it was not able to detect the metadata and put it as “BBC documentary” I manually fixed all the pics and ect…
now when I add Ancient Aliens instead of just making its own listing it adds it in to the Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways ???
on the hard drive there all in there own folder under TV shows but PLEX just puts them all together is there away to stop this???
Would you mind sharing how exactly you named those media files and how they’re grouped in the folder linked to your library?
If the matching goes that badly wrong it implies there might be something more at hand.
Otherwise instead of manually replacing texts and pictures you could have used the “match” function on the tv-show level.
Based on Plex naming conventions, the following example should work:
TV Shows <-- the folder linked to your tv-show library
Foo Fighters Sonic Highways <-- Windows doesn't support ':' chars in file names, so just drop it
Season 01
Foo Fighters Sonic Highways - s01e01 - Chicago.ext
Foo Fighters Sonic Highways - s01e02.ext <-- text after the season/episode pattern will be ignored anyway
Foo Fighters Sonic Highways - s01e03.ext
...
Foo Fighters Sonic Highways - s01e08.ext
Ancient Aliens
Season 01
Ancient Aliens - s01e01 - The Evidence.ext
Ancient Aliens - s01e02.ext
...
Ancient Aliens - s01e05.ext
Season 02
Ancient Aliens - s02e01.ext
Ancient Aliens - s02e02.ext
...
Ancient Aliens - s02e10.ext
...
Season 15
...
Ancient Aliens - s15e12 - Aliens and the Presidents.ext
where .ext is your file extension
You should not add additional folder levels or leave others out.
Plex does not like it if you mix different types of videos in a single library.
You should keep movies and tv-shows in separate libraries.
You can keep your tv-show documentaries with your regular tv-shows and your documentary movies with your regular movies – but you cannot mix tv-show type videos with movie-type videos.
Example
D:
Documentaries (TV)
Ancient Aliens (2010)
Season 01
Ancient Aliens (2010) - s01e01.ext
...
Documentaries
A traveler's guide to the planets (2010)
A traveler's guide to the planets (2010).ext
Secret Life of Cats (2014)
Secret Life of Cats.ext
...
You’re missing my point.
Let’s look at the 2 examples here:
Ancient Aliens is a 15-season tv-show
The Secret Life of Cats is a movie
Both are documentaries… that doesn’t change that you cannot bring them together in a single library within Plex.
You’ll need 2 top-level folders, e.g. Documentaries (TV) and Documentary-Films in which you place the documentaries of each type. Then you can have 2 libraries in Plex – one for tv-show type and one for movie-type content, wich each of them linked to the respective content folder.
Based on the above example:
Library
Library Type
Related Folder
Documentaries (TV)
TV Shows
D:\Documentaries (TV)\
Documentaries
Movies
D:\Documentaries\
From what I could find, your content should split like this:
Some of your names slightly vary from how they’re listed on those repositories.
Not quite sure about Vitamania – if this is referring to Vitamania: The Sense and Nonsense of Vitamins from 2018, this is a movie documentary (TheTVDb, The Movie Database, IMDb).
“Should” is not really appropriate. With Plex it is either “is” or “is not.” Rather than worrying about how Plex “should” behave you only need to worry about how Plex works and adhere to their guidelines.
It is best not to fight the great “Plex-i-saurus.” Trying to fight the great thunder lizard Plex is can do more damage to your data than Godzilla did to Tokyo on all his visits combined.
