Plex movie library only has 1 movie - there should be 200+

Server Version#: 4.22.3
Player Version#:
Host: QNAP NAS (Linux)

I had some problems with Radarr necessitating a re-install and re-build of it’s db… Following that I downloaded a movie. When I couldn’t see that movie in my Plex client, I went to Plex server>movies>Scan Library Files. It went through and ended up only listing 1 movie, the one I just downloaded. Is one connected with the other? How do I recover the situation?

Is this “just” a matter of forcing Plex to rebuild its database(s)? I mean I would like to understand how the problem occurred but in a practical sense, I need to get it working again. Also, if the problem was caused by the re-install of Radarr, then finding the answer is all the more important because it looks like I have to re-install Sonarr which could have a similar effect on Plex!

The connection between Radarr and Plex is pretty light.

  1. Radarr manipulates files on disk
  2. Radarr tells Plex “scan for files on disk”

In Plex, you have Libraries that are configured to point to directories. Plex isn’t “dependent” on Radarr at all.

So, go look at the directories you have configured in Plex. Are they still configured? Are the movie files still in those directories?

Thanks for the response. I’m trying to understand some terminology here. As I understand it, Radarr identifies a movie to be downloaded and gives that info to Sabnzbd which downloads it and put it in a folder (I’ll call “Movie Downloads”) with all other downloaded movies. Does Sabnzbd tell Radarr that the download has succeeded (or is Radarr monitoring the download) so that it can tell Plex to “scan for files on disk”? Either way, the Movie Downloads folder does still contain all the movies. The directory for movies is still configured and points to the “Movie Downloads” folder within my NAS.

I’m not sure about the communication between Radarr and any download agents. I suspect Radarr polls for completed downloads periodically. It’s possible there is other communication too.

But from a Plex perspective, the communication from Radarr is just a hint: “If you scan now, there’s new media for you to find.”

Plex doesn’t need those messages. You can also scan manually in Plex, or on a schedule, or let Plex notice the new files itself.

Can you verify (screenshots?) that your Plex Libraries point to the correct directories? And the movie files - the one that’s working, vs. an example that isn’t working?

I wonder if permissions were changed, or if something happened to rename a directory.

This is the one movie that Plex shows me and the screenshot shows that it points to the correct directory. As for showing one that doesn’t work, I’m not sure how I’d do that because there are no other choices.

I’m glad to see the “Movie Name (Year)” folder, that’s super helpful for matching.

How about outside Plex - if you browse to your nasMovies share itself, you have other “Movie Name (Year)” directories with movies inside them, equivalent to this one, I assume?

If so, my next thought is permissions - making sure that the user Plex is running as can access the files. Verifying that is going to be NAS-specific, and I don’t know the details.

It might also be useful to do a manual Scan Library Files in Plex, and then share the PMS logs.

This might be a good @ChuckPa thing, if he sees it. He’s a Plex-on-NAS wizard.

Ok, it’s at this point that I need to apologise for wasting your time. I’ve assumed that nasMovies had all the movies because Radarr shows them all but when I browse that folder, it only has two movies, the one that Plex says is in it’s library and another which for some reason Plex doesn’t show. Looking at Radarr, I now see that it thinks movies are located in an external drive that I used when re-installing Radarr.

So, now I need to work out how to change Radarr’s current folder to nasMovies and whether that means a mass import or something else. Nevertheless, once I get the movies into nasMovies, I assume I tell Plex to “scan library files” and it should then see them all.

Again, apologies.

The reason Plex doesn’t show the other movie is that the folder is empty!
