I have a lot of multi-disc sets, with a single artist. I’ve checked my tags with mp3tag, and they look good. However, in Plex, many of the discs get blended together, so I see multiple track 1s, multiple track 2s, etc, one after another. Again, I’ve looked at my tags in mp3tag, and the discs are tagged properly, so I’m not sure what it’s doing with them.
Make sure the ‘disc number’ metatag only contains a number, not more.
You can help Plex by putting your files into a proper folder structure.
After correcting issues with the embedded metatags and/or file naming, you may have to perform the Plex Dance (although for music you can omit step 4)
I think Plex is going in the wrong direction…I followed the instructions above on a box set I have that was coming back incorrectly, and when I added it back in, it added it with only a single disc, none of the other discs in the set showing up at all.
Are your embedded metatags usually correctly set and complete?
You might have better results if you activate ‘use embedded meta tags’ in the properties of your music library. (I am assuming you have created a Plex Premium Music library)

Box Sets, though are difficult. Plex has no real support for them. It is all
Artist - Album - Track
A box set would introduce an additonal layer into this organisation.
So either you let your box set appear as a multi-disc album (which would mean you have to set the embedded metadata AlbumTitle and AlbumArtist tags to an identical value for all discs)
or you break it up into its single albums (if the box set was compiled from regular of albums at all, that is).

How have you named your files currently and which embeded metadata are currently present in the files?
I’m sorry, I think I should have been more specific. Being a big deadhead, I tend to have a lot of multi-disc releases. The box set in question is Phish ‘Amsterdam’ - about eight discs of material, but all by the same artist. It still would fall under the Artist-Album-Track methodology in that case, I’d think.
I built this server in March, and I honestly don’t know if I did it as a Plex Premium music library. Is there a way I can look to see?

Yes, I guess then it would constitue an album with 8 discs.
If you are a serious collector of music, I can only recommend you to put great care into the tagging and file naming of your music. It makes live much easier in the long run.
If you do so, it is best to instruct Plex to put the biggest weight on embedded metadata and folder organisation/ file naming.
You do so by going to
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums - Premium Music/Last.fm
grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and pull it all the way upwards, so it ends up on top of the list of agents.
Then set also the checkbox ‘Use embedded tags’ in the properties of your library.

If you Edit your library, then go to the ‘Advanced’ tab (wait 1 or 2 seconds)
there should be either a text ‘Premium Music Settings’ or ‘Last.fm settings’

What I ended up doing was, deleting my library entirely, making the changes you specified above, and building the library from scratch. Some things are coming back as they should, others are still coming back strangely. The metadata looks correct to me, so I can only guess it’s something to do with the track names and/or folder structure.
I have the the 12 disk Fare Thee Well - Complete Box Set and it works (Premium Music Library). They take some manual work to structure, but I do like the results. [Note: Select all the individual tracks for a disk, click on the Edit icon, and change the Disk number and Album name (one album name for the entire set).

You should make all changes to embedded metadata before adding the files into Plex. Fetch yourself a decent metadata editor. (For Windows I recommend mp3tag)
Actually, this is kind of strange…it looks like Plex is taking it upon itself to mix up separate albums. And this is after I made the changes telling it to favor my metadata. For example, I have two versions of an opera, in different folder structures, and Plex is for some reason mixing the two together. So when I’m looking at the Janowski version, in Disc 4, I see two Track 1s…
D:\Music\Richard Wagner\Der Ring Des Nibelungen\4-01 Act II_Prelude; Sc 1; Nun Zaume Dein Ross, Reisige Maid!.mp3
and:
D:\Music\Richard Wagner\Der Ring Des Nibelungen [Janowski]\4-01 Wagner_Die Walkure - Prelude.mp3
The metadata for the two tracks list the albums properly:
Der Ring Des Nibelungen [Janowski] as the album, track 1, disc 4/14, and Der Ring Des Nibelungen, track 1, disc 4/14.
And for some reason, it on and off continues to mix the two together, even though they’re in separate folders and tagged properly.
After editing embedded metadata when the files are already in Plex, you need to perform the Plex Dance (for music, minus step 4)
If you want Plex to rely solely on your embedded metadata, you must also move ‘Local Media Assets’ to the top position under
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums - Plex Premium Music
(additionally to ticking the checkbox ‘use embedded tags’)
I didn’t edit any metadata, the metadata was already clean. The files were new to Plex, as I completely deleted the application, reinstalled it, and before adding a library, I made the ‘Local Media Assets’ and ‘embedded tags’ changes.
Could you send me a link per PM to download your files (both versions)?
