Plex Music - wrong artist showing?

I have a very healthy music library with meta-tags I’ve worked with over the years quite a bit in iTunes. My imported music from iTunes is mostly correct. The problem I’ve noticed is that those items which have “album artist” blank all filed under a single band. I went into iTunes and fixed this to all be “Various Artists”. However when I refresh all meta data or analyze the library, nothing changes. I’ve even done a search for a new match, found the right one, and the file still won’t updated.

Here are my settings and a screen-shot of the problem.

  • Prefer Local Media
  • Store Track Progress
  • Include related content from shared libraries
  • Artist Bios
  • Album Reviews and Critic Ratings
  • Popular Tracks
  • Genres: Embedded Tags
  • Album Art: Both Plex Music and Local Files
  • Scanner: Plex Music
  • Agent: Plex Music

My Agents are set up both in Personal Media and .fm to look at “local” first.

Any help you have would be appreciated. I have not tried The Plex Dance as I’m not certain how to do this with an imported music library in a way that would not wipe out plays and playlists.

Any help you have is appreciated.

Thanks for the quick replay @ottoKerner.

I followed that and found that majority of the items in question had in itunes checkmarked “composer”. I unchecked those and verified they are in the correct folder (see example below).

Other steps I took

  • renamed all Album Artists to “Val…” to clear out any bad meta data
  • renamed all album artist back to “Various Artists”
  • removed any entry in the “composer” field
  • Refreshed Music Library meta Data

RESULT: 44 of 78 still had issues…including the one below. Thoughts?

Just in case people stumble in here with the same issue, here is what I did to fix.

  1. I used the article posted above
  2. I then redid all “album artists” to something rando like “VAR…” just to clear the cache and any lower-case issues I may have had (think Various artists vs Various Artists. It doesn’t show in itunes but it does in the file structure)
  3. I refreshed plex meta data
  4. I then changed all back to “Various Artists”
  5. Refreshed Plex Meta data
  6. Went 1-1 with the remaining and did the following
    • If exists: Fix Match
    • if not exists: Refresh Meta data then Fix Match
    • select appropriate match

Tedious a bit, yes, but it worked and I don’t have to mess with this anymore.

For those of you who are about to convert from iTunes to Plex…good for you! it’s a great choice. Amazing experience, just ensure you clean up your “album artists” first so they are all filled in before you do the conversion or you’ll run into significant cleanup issues.
