Plex no longer reading metadata for albums

I’ve just encountered this problem…Plex has just stopped reading metadata from files, now before someone states the obvious regarding settings issue (ie Local Media Assets, Done that bought the T-Shirt)…I must point out it’s been working up until now perfectly, it read the metadata and pictures in folders and the dates on the files and put them in Plex correctly … however it’s not reading them now, On all new Album entries into the Music Library in Plex, do the following… the dates of the albums show 1900-01-01, the embedded picture of the album is not attaching and the photo of the band is not reading either. Before someone states the obvious again…I cleaned the trash, I’ve done the bundles, I’ve Optimized the data…still no luck. The only thing that I see that’s changed is that I upgraded to Server Version 1.12.1.4885 recently, but I can’t be sure that’s the problem because I thought it may have been correctly working after the install, but I’m not sure, the only thing I am sure of is Plex have very lousy customer support for a company that wants you to buy their product. Any Thoughts.

Thanks

Similar problem here - but with TV shows. My plex server has been constantly trying to update the same 15 TV episodes constantly since I noticed this. I’ve also tried doing the dance, cleaning bundles, optimizing the database, etc. Nothing’s worked thus far.

Same here, in regards to TV shows. No longer finding episode descriptions and other metadata. I’ve also done the dance to no avail.

Both TheTVDB (api.thetvdb.com) and Plex’s (tvdb2.plex.tv) API’s are down right now. The Plex team is aware of this (there’s a response in the PlexPass forums on a similar thread) and they are working on it.

Glad they’re aware of that. Just came here to the forum to report this issue. Thanks for updating us.

Thanks for that update…but I solved it by doing something I should have before posting… I rebooted my computer and did a rescan of the library and voila it discovered the mistakes and fixed them, plus any I’ve added since then have read proper… the only thing that kind of bugs me now is the fact that this error was known by the Plex Pass Team, but the response was in an area which you have to have bought a Plex Pass to read, not in the general forum. Why would I buy a Plex Pass for a product that clearly has issues of reliability (judging by the forums) and shows very little sign of support for their product.

Don’t get me wrong I love the look and feel of their product but I do tend to rant when I see obvious signs where improvement can be made and see no response about these issues from “Support Staff”, or should we call them “Air Support Staff”, they may be there but you just can’t see it or hear it until someone farts.

I see drawbacks in areas where there can be drastic improvement.

The Movies and TV Show sections are great …two thumbs up there, but that’s only 2/5’s of the libraries they list.

Music: As a large music collector, I would like to see a few fields added to the library that you don’t normally see during a scan of a file with metadata, the following fields would not only improve the look and feel and not detract from the Plex experience but also help collectors like myself use Plex to catalog there collection. The thing about it is you can hide or show these features by adding buttons and such to turn on or off what you see.

Here are some thoughts:

  1. Another field for back covers, not only used for albums but movies as well…yes it requires someone to scan in or download the cover and link it to file such as add poster or background but collectors do this all the time (check out almost any movie or music managers/catalog programs and you see it…at least any of the ones that you would care to buy)

  2. A field for dates (remastered, reissue) other than the only one that you have which is original release date

  3. Field for type of file (source description) (bootleg, live, FM broadcast, etc)

  4. Support for albums (box sets) that have both CD and DVD included (ps I know that you want us to convert the files from a DVD or TS, ISO and to rename them specifically, which of course is not practical to a collector because DVDs that have menus and other extra media that does not transfer over without making the video a complete jumbled mess is a complete turn off)…now one way of doing this is giving us a hyperlink from the Music Section (Album) to a section in either the Movie or TV Libraries where the video file resides (currently I created a Music Videos library by creating a new type of TV library, Please see my other comments about “Music Videos (Solved…I think)” and “Music Library”. Right now I’m just putting a description in the album section that the DVD is located on such and such drive.

A Word to the Wise: With more and more files that are in Blue Ray and now 4K formats…you can’t keep sticking to the old story we won’t do this, you have to conform or adapt your product to our restrictions, now runs the risk of another competitor creating a great looking product that does have the support for current (ISO, VOB, TS) but also new and upcoming formats. We’ve seen this over and over again in business, those who won’t adapt or listen to their supporters are doomed to fail, but I digress, now for the other libraries, short and unused as they maybe.

Photos and Other Videos: Maybe resourceful but the instructions on how to use it and get them to work right or at least the way I understand they work are mutually exclusive,

Here’s a thought, instead of spending all your time and effort on creating VR and cutting cords, how bout you spend a bit of time creating instructional videos and post them on your website…that would go a long way not only to promote and sell your product, but stop people like myself ranting and raving because we can’t figure out why something doesn’t work the way it should. Sites like Monoprice make videos on just about every product they sell, how to use it and what one’s right for you.

Humboldt Strong…Our thoughts and prayers are with you
