Ok, seems like I am having a issue with windows firewall. When I turn off both private and public, the remote access works, when I turn them both on, remote access stops working. How can I get remote access to work with windows firewall on. Plex server is on windows 10 computer. I tried to research and found one article but could not follow it, was over my head. It talked about adding 2 rules, which did not specify whether its supposed to be inbound or outbound rules.
Win key + R” to open the Run box. Run “wf.msc” (either by doing a WinKey+R or searching for it). Make 2 New Rules: a.) Type is ‘Port’, b.) TCP with Specified local ports: 32400, and c.) “Allow the connection”. The second time through make the rule UDP instead of TCP.
If you are using the default Windows firewall, and it’s activated during setup, the setup.exe for Plex server will create all necessary rules automatically.
I believe it was activated when I first set Plex up, over a year ago. But now I am at this point where remote access doesn’t work unless windows firewall is disabled so how do I get it to work now?
Have you verified that your network connection is not classified as ‘public’ by Windows? (it must be ‘private’)
This is one of the frequent sources of failure. It can change during a major OS update or when the main router in a network is exchanged by a different device.
You can run the setup routine again – without losing any data – this way:
All you need to do is:
Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows (do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.)
for safety, reboot Windows
download the installation exe of the current server version and install it (most of the time it can also be found in here: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates)
