Plex not counting some movies (HD number differs from Plex UI)

I noticed that my movies folder on my Mac Server shows 935 movies (all seemingly well-named with some in Folders and some not) while the Plex UI (via Safari or Apple TV) shows only 909 or so. Also, when I sort the movies (via Safari) by “Title” the number humps to 915 while all other sorting criteria shows 909. So, what might be the problem and solution here? If you think it’s a naming issue on some of the files… How can I get Plex to reveal the problematic titles (if any).

Thanks,

Robert

The number showing in Plex is the number of items displayed in the current view.
The two most common causes for the numbers deviating from the number of files on your HDD are collections and duplicates/versions.

If you have collections enabled (or automatically created for you), Plex will by default hide the items of those collections and only show the collection entry (1 collection item vs. x movie items) – this could e.g. apply if you have grouped “The Lord of the Rings” movies.

If you have different versions of the same movie (e.g. different qualities or cuts), Plex defaults to displaying those as 1 movie item in your library. Those files will show a blue square/circle with a number in the top-left corner of the movie poster, displaying the number of versions of this movie.
In most cases that’s ok for different qualities… in that case you can click Play Version and pick based on a number of technical details (e.g. resolution, bitrate).
If you have different editions/cuts of the same movie, you might want to Split them to show as separate items.
