This is about the display of the number of mp4 files in Plex. I have 1983 mp4 files in 14 folders, arranged alphabetically. When I look at the library by the “Movies” function, Plex reports 1981 files. If I change to the “Folders” function, Plex reports 1983 - when all the numbers of each of the 14 alphabetic folders is added up. To be clear, there are 1983 physical files. Plex consistently reports 2 less files than that actual number when using the “Movie” sort function. It isn’t a huge issue, just very odd that Plex seemingly has two different methods of totaling the number of files in its Library. Just thought someone should know…
The number isn’t reflecting the number of files but the number of items visible in the library / current view.
Plex could recognize two files as different-quality versions of the same movie in which 2 files result in 1 item. Similarly, Plex could be configured to automatically create collections – if the library is configured to display collections but hide their items from the default library view, you could also end up with less items (e.g. 1 collection item representing 9 Star Wars movie items).
I understand that but it doesn’t explain that when you open Plex with it set to display movies there is one total and when you change it to display folders and sum up all the totals Plex displays in each folder you get a different number.
The sum number of mp4’s in the folders matches the physical number of files. Switch back to the Movies display mode and the number displayed (presumably a sum of the totals from all the folders) is not the same.
By your explanation, shouldn’t the number displayed be the same? I’m going to do a labor-intensive count of the files displayed in Movie mode and see what the actual number is.
Not necessarily, if Plex believes a few of those files are different versions of other files you have. That would make it logical for the number to be less if it’s got what it believes to be duplicates.
Have you checked/filtered for duplicate entries? You can split them if they’ve incorrectly matched together.
I GOT IT! Thanks for the advice and help. I don’t understand how it happened, but I got it straightened out.
2 movies showed up as duplicates.
G.I. Jane showed up as a duplicate with In Pursuit of Honor.
Unstoppable showed up as a duplicate with Runaway Train.
Got them renamed with the year in the file name and all is good.
Thanks again.
