Plex Not Detecting New Files but only in TV Shows

Agents on Diskstation for Programmes (= TV Shows?):

Note: whenI uploaded sample episodes to Diskstation, I included only the .mp4 files - none of the image or .nfo files from TinyMediaManager in the folders

Agents on Plexserver for Programmes:

I see the Advanced order is reversed on Plexserver. I’ll try changing that.

And in other sub headings, I’ve moved Local Media Assets to the top of each list on both servers.

Will try again on plexserver. Will delete current folders for these two series, do the Plex dance again, then upload just .mp4 as I just did on Diskstation.

Please also restart both servers. Make certain everything is at a know baseline

I think I’ve done that on the v1.15x Plexserver. I ran
service plexmediaserver restart on the command line, and in response got
Redirecting to /bin/systemctl restart plexmediserver.service

Does that do it?

After that, Plexserver still doesn’t see the Murdoch Mysteries in TV Shows.

One of the episodes S01E01 has metadata, but S01E05 has the tags stripped out. It isn’t seeing either.

I’ll try adding local assets from TinyMediaManager and see if that makes any difference.

No, still not showing up.

Can I revert the Centos version? If so, how?

At this point, it seems that it works when adding either new TV series or further episodes, on Synology/v1.14x, but for additions on Centos/Plexserver v1.15x after | upgraded from v1.14x, it no longer works for TV Shows, but does for a Movie added today.

However, earlier episodes 1-4 of Murdoch Mysteries worked fine on the original (and only) previous version which i installed about five or six weeks ago, downloading the then latest version for Linux.

Absolutely.

On both Synology and regular Linux, you can uninstall the binary package without risk to your metadata. I store them in different locations on the disk.

I’m a bit limited in understanding the Linux way of doing things. I even had trouble doing the Manual update on Centos - I was able to download the .rpm to my computer, but then couldn’t see how to install it on the server - every time I clicked on Update, it just downloaded another installer file. Maybe it did install automatically, but needed a restart to tell me so? Anyway, it suddenly told me that I was up to date with the new version.

I think I’m being dense - sorry - but I can’t see where to get an older version, just the current one on the plex site.

All the older installers except one that I have saved in my Downloads folder are .spk files for the NAS.

The only older .rpm is v1.15.1.791 which is what I think I must have installed earlier on Centos, before 1.15.4.993 - should I use that, or go back to a v1.14 (.0.5470 now) which is what I have on Diskstation?

Thanks again for your patience.

pS. How do i install the older .rpm I have? Using yum, I guess, but where do i put the .rpm on the server so yum can install it?

Linux is all command line.

  1. Download the file from Plex.tv
  2. to change version:
sudo yum remove plexmediaserver
sudo yum install newly-downloaded-file.rpm

I’ve been to the plex.tv site, and can only see how to download the latest 1.15.4.x version. Google didn’t find an older version either.

Where should i put the older v1.15.0x .rpm i have on the server, so yum can find it?

Normally you download into your Downloads directory

This said,

  1. open the terminal window
  2. cd Downloads
  3. Now begin the process

These are the basic commands you’ll need to master if you continue to use Linux.

Many thanks. I must have done it before, but starting from a blank slate. I had already done the *yum remove… * bit.

Reinstalled older rpm v 1.15.1.791 successfully - thanks for your help.

Deleted old Murdoch Mysteries folder and contents.

Did plex dance to clear any remnants.

Restarted the Plexserver.

Created a new folder Murdoch Mysteries in video/TV shows folder with new Season 01 subfolder.

Copied one episode (01) mp4 file to server. Checked ownership (john/john) and folder/file permissions - 0775 and 0764 respectively.

Ran Scan (TV Shows) Library.

STILL nothing shows up.

I’ll have to give up for the night. It HAS worked, with the older Plex Server version 1.15.1x but isn’t now.

So I’m out of ideas again.

Where could I download an even older Linux version? The plex.tv site only has one place to Download that I can find, and that leads only to the latest version.

And google hasn’t helped either - I just get taken to plex.tv home page.

Even plex.tv/downloads now only seems to show the latest download.

You may recall that I moved my PlexServer to a Centos server a few weeks ago because the Diskstation NAS was completely choking on my Photos collection.

The rest of it was and still is apparently working for Movies, TV Shows and Music.

Would I be best advised to keep using my Diskstation for those media types, and not upgrading it, and just use the Centos server for Photos (assuming that continues to work when I add a few hundred more recent photos?)

A pity - I get generally faster response on the new Centos server, but it isn’t any use if I can’t add new media and access them. I still don’t really know what might be stopping that.

Would some logs help? If so, when should I take them?

Let’s do one last thing.

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Go to /var/lib/plexmediaserver
  3. Rename Library to Library.keep
  4. Start it
  5. Create a new server instance with these exceptions:
    a. Create only one section - The problematic TV library
    b. Give this server a “TEST-SERVER” name (friendly name) to avoid collision with the default name.
  6. Skip remote access and all that.

Will try that tomorrow evening or more likely Wednesday - past midnight here in UK and I’m just off to bed.

And busy most of tomorrow during the day and evening. But may have a chance to try late tomorrow evening. Otherwise some time on Wednesday when I’m not so busy.

Thanks for hanging in there with me. I’d really like to (a) understand why it isn’t working and (b) get it working, with the latest version of plex if possible.

There doesn’t seem to be anything fundamentally wrong with the file names or even internal tags, since they worked instantly on the Synology NAS. Just something odd in the interaction with the server on Centos.

I concur. As if there is a corruption in the database which nothing can detect. Creating a fresh test instance will allow us to isolate to that specific library independent of all others.

I’m having similar issues I don’t see new episodes added and I removed two TV shows and they will not delete from Plex.

Have you attempted anything we’ve done with our discussion.

I would also like to see DEBUG log files, captured 30 seconds after the scanner finished (force a scan).

Hi team, i use Ubuntu and Plex Media server version 1.15.4.993 and i have the same problem, i was made all the changes and the situation is the same, inclusive, i use the command chmod 777 for change the permissions, i put a tv show in a movies library, then PMS now see it, not identify like a movie, but i can see in the plex now

I would like to ask some basic questions:

Q: Where is the media mounted?

  • If it’s mounted under /media, there will be problems. Ubuntu claims /media and makes exclusive access to your username. User plex can’t see it without jumping through serious hoops. This is Linux’s default security kicking in.
  • In almost all cases, it’s quicker and more reliable to mount the disks / remote shares elsewhere.

I have a how-to which shows how. I will link it here if it helps.

Q: Does the media comply with the naming specifications ?

Q: Was any of the naming modified after having been scanned by Plex?

Q: May I see log files?
