Plex not reading music folder accurately

I installed Plex Media Server yesterday for the first time on a Windows 10 computer. I have a library of about 600 albums in 530 folders, all in mp3 format. I am only trying to use Plex for these albums, no video, TV, etc.

After installing Plex and pointing it to my library it appeared to scan all the folders. At one point it got to about 630 albums, which sounds right. But when I opened Plex on another computer it only showed 330 albums.

This morning when I went to the computer where Plex is installed it only shows 330 albums. A lot of the albums that were there yesterday are missing.

I rebooted the computer but it had no effect.

I am doing everything in the browser interface because when I click on the Plex Media Center app nothing happens.

After the scan I examined the library in Plex and found several problems with it:

  • Some folders / albums are duplicated
  • Some folders / albums are missing altogether
  • I tried adding one of the missing folders by specifying it in the Add

I’d love to get Plex working, I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. Any guidance on these problems would be very much appreciated.

See for instance I want a definitive solution to naming singles in Plex

@OttoKerner thank you for the suggestion. I’m not very technically fluent with Plex so I may not be understanding how to interpret that link. It seems to refer to how to handle singles being mis-categorized. I don’t have any singles and my problem is that albums are being entirely missed. And some that were added yesterday have disappeared. I haven’t done any tagging of my music files but when I examine the mp3 tags of the albums that have been missed and the albums that have been included I can’t see any difference.

It explains in general how music is handled in Plex. Its point is that singles are handled exactly like albums. Which is what you want to know.

Ensure that all your albums have the AlbumArtist tag. That is a different tag than the regular Artist tag. As per the linked thread.
