Hi,
I want to install Plex media server on a TS-133 QNAP Nas.
It is not (yet) in the compatibility list. It uses a ARM 4-core Cortex-■■■ 1.8GHz processor.
Does this mean I can’t install Plex on this NAS?
Or is one of the other available packages compatible with this processor?
Regards
I’ve not had access to one to test.
Based on the QNAP specs, ARMv8 package will work.
I cannot guarantee performance.
- There will be no HW transcoding.
- SW transcoding of 1080p H.264 up to about 20 Mbps will be achievable.
I have the predecessor TS-128 as my development machine
Thanks ChuckPa,
For the quick response.
II am using the Nas only for storing and playing music (stored on an SSD), so I think I don’t need these acceleration options.
Once installed and not working I assume I can also uninstall Plex from the NAS?
Regards.
Bert
You did say you wanted to install Plex on the TS-133.
If you’re only using the TS-133 for storage, You should install Plex on the machine which will be running the server.
You then have that machine look to (point to) the TS-133 to find the media.
I was happy that, with a NAS and a Lumin U2, I could skip my PC having straight connections.
And I was thinking that plex could be installed on the NAS, but it seems you advise is not to do that? And get back my PC and install plex on it?
I think the intended usage and limits is important to be clear about.

If you are only playing Music – You’re golden. The TS-133 will work perfectly.
-
If you, at any point in the future, decide to add video (TV or Movies) -
This is where you will run into limits. 720p and 1080p H.264 files will be ok provided
– H.264 (AVC) encoded
– Bit rate approximately 20 Mbps.
If both of these constraints are acceptible for you -
Then YES install PMS on the TS-133 .
It will be a good experience for you.
My concern was that you not have a bad experience. (I wouldn’t like it either)
Yes, my intentions are music only. No video.
All clear. TS-133 is a good choice for plex.
Thanks!
