Quick question as I’m confused on what I need. I have a Plex server which is on my home network (LAN). It’s not accessible via the WAN and I do not have Plex Pass. My wife wants to watch the shows on her Android phone, but only at home (LAN). My questions are as follows:
Does she create an account and purchase the $5 app and is then allowed to watch?
Do I need a plex pass since technically I’m sharing with another user?
No one needs a PLEX pass to get this working. However the pass will get you extra perks and controls over your server. Also it’s best to help the developers out by getting the pass. Now on to the issue, wife should create her own account like any other friend you may be sharing with. Then you can add that user as a home user but not necessary I don’t believe. If you have any clients already hooked up to the tv, the wife can just use those which are free like tv, fire tv, Roku or possibly a smart tv. If not all mobile devices app will need the 1 time fee of $5 paid per App Store but covers all devices under the same account. To be clear you have no issues playing while at home?
When I or she tries to watch anything, it says we need to activate a license. So that means she needs to get the $5 license to be able to watch from home. If I get a plex pass, then it counts as the $5 license if I understand correctly. Currently we can watch from a laptop or Xbox/TV without any issues.
I used to have plex pass, but I never streamed outside my network. However now with 2 kids and travelling, I’m thinking about getting a lifetime discount option or a yearly plan.
Your wife can pay the $5 one-time charge to unlock the app and remove the 1 minute time-out.
The purchase is tied to the app store login, so it will also work on her other Android devices. The purchase is not transferable between app stores, so if she wants to play media on an iPhone/iPad, that’s another $5.
Note that the $5 applies only to mobile devices - phones & tablets. It is not required for Rokus, FireSticks, Shields, etc.
She does not necessarily need her own Plex.tv login. You could simply let her use your login & password. Nothing prevents it.
She could also have her own plex.tv account. You would send her an invite. After she accepts she will have access to the libraries you choose to share with her.
