Plex on LG does not react to controls

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 3.90.1 (webOS 3.3.0)

For a long time I’ve been using Xplay without any issues, but recently I’ve noticed there is new official Plex for my tv and I like it as it almost does not require transcoding when subtitles are enabled.

But one thing that is really annoying is that right after app is started and playback of video is started, app does not react to remote control - pressing navigation arrows and ok button/wheel does not do anything for about an minute, than it works as expected.

Meantime, tv is responsive to any input, so when Plex app ignores me, I can still browse tv menus, change volume etc.

Any idea why is this happening and how to fix it?

To me that sounds like your Bluetooth module is on it way out. You could try re setting your TV and initializing your remote.

If there would be something wrong with bluetooth module, I would expect all controls to be broken, not only Plex app. As I’ve mentioned, when Plex app is ignoring me, I can still use tv menus, change volume etc. Plex is the only app where this is happening.

This happens to me too. And it isn’t the Bluetooth.

It started recently; worked very well before. I would say this bug introduced with v3.90.0, based on the timing for when it started.

Are you guys using the Magic Remote? I only have the regular IR remote and it works fine.

MovieFan, you’re onto something, but may not be “exclusive” to Magic Remote.

When using the Magic Remote, yes, you are forced to use the wheel and navigation arrows (because that’s all it has, besides PLAY and PAUSE) and this problem can be reproduced.

On another LG TV I have, with the “regular” remote, if I use the wheel and navigation arrows on that, the issue can be reproduced. Using the “regular” remote’s other buttons (STOP, REW, FF) all work ok, as expected. (This may be a hybrid remote; it has way more buttons but also can act like a Magic Remote. Point is, when you’re forced to use the on screen options instead of a hard button, this issue appears.)

So the OSD buttons are not responding? Or they can’t be made to appear during this time?

They can’t be made to appear. Most of the time, I have to hit the back button to just exit out. Occasionally, I’ve had to completely exit the Plex client.

Unfortunately, this is an intermittent issue. It seems to NOT happen right away. So you can launch Plex, watch a few videos and use the OSD buttons, no problem. Then after watching a lot of videos and/or using Plex for a long time, this problem occurs.

I’ll try to track this better and add more details when I have them. As I stated, everything worked fine for me until recently so I need more data points to nail down a pattern.

Are you guys using the Magic Remote?

Yes I am. And the tv model is LG OLED B6 if it helps  Didn’t have chance to try it on any other LG tv.

So the OSD buttons are not responding? Or they can’t be made to appear during this time?

Can’t be made to appear.

Seems my issue is slightly different from what adadnod is describing. I never can make OSD to appear just after starting Plex and movie playback. After about an minute I can make it appear and all works as expected. After that it never happened that I could not make it appear again until Plex is restarted. After Plex is restarted it is broken again for about an minute. Please note the minute is just guess, can make exact measurement if it helps

Would making a video of this behaviour help?

To chime in on this discussion, my B8 does not display this issue with the Magic Remote. Have you trying resetting the TV and re registering your remote?

Or have read through this LG support page
