Hi Dave,
One resource you and the team may find useful is this jellyfish file repository of different bitrates. I’ve been using the 140Mbps file and the 200Mbps HEVC versions and can make plex crash usually 2 times out of 3. Maybe this can be a good hammer test for your engineers before the next beta release?
How often do you have 200 mbps in reality?
Not often at all, but the point is to find a stress test that can force the failure so the plex team can troubleshoot. Also, since bitrates vary in standard movies, having a psuedo constant high bitrate sample file can make it easier for the devs to troubleshoot, instead of having to try to find a specific high bitrate scene where the bitrate spikes.
Not trying to say we all need 200Mbps support (altho the shield should support it, and it plays fine in kodi…). Just suggesting a useful tool for recreating the problems.
I just got the tube nvidia shield 2019. On the first day the plex app worked properly, after updating it died. Install the add plex on kodi and it worked without problem, 4k, hdr atmos / dts x. Today apparently the kodi add on was updated and also died, I have two plex apps, none functional. When playing something it sends me to the home and I cannot manipulate.
i got “Plex Tube” but the overall experience is the Plex is the least stable app of them all.
-
start up freeze. Logo shows, then blank gray screen shows… and that’s it
-
full system freeze. The whole system stops responding, remote doesn’t work for a long minute. Solution: try load test by switching all apps except Plex - problem gone.
-
the frustrating issue with app not coming back to their previous state (like playback in progress). I thought it’s general issue for this 2GB RAM device, but it seems Plex is the problem. Just a quick settings popup and go back - Plex restarts, playback terminated.
-
fan mode = LOUD is a helpful setting. Turn it on for Plex, keep it Quiet for other apps.
=> that tells me Plex has highest CPU and RAM footprint of preinstalled apps
The new player and main app is quite better and faster than WebOS app so i can’t wait for improvements. The big button is mapped to PLEX of course. Thanks.

We’ve been using them for years
But thanks for the link, I’m sure others will appreciate it
is this issue still being worked on because I am patiently waiting for a solution.
Work around is to get yourself a Pro. Can someone change the title of this topic? Change Pro to Tube please.
Same issue as everyone else on the tube.
Starts fine, UI gets more and more unresponsive untill the video stutters and finally crashes.
During the stutter it can take a long time to return to normal after pressing the back button
Any news for a version with stability for nvidia shield tube?
Today my plex is totally useless, freezing in the principal screen.
Is impossible play any video, i need restart de nvidia to recover use.
Thanks.
Chiming in to say I just started experiencing this in the past few days. Playback will stop usually after ~15 minutes and show an unstable connection error, although sometimes I have gone for as long as 40 minutes or so without playback being interrupted. Initial testing suggests disabling the new video player prevents the interruption from occurring.
- Shield Pro 2019
- Plex Client 8.4.2.19372
- Plex Server 1.19.5.3112
Can you provide some logs covering the relevant period, please?
Apologies, but it seems I can’t replicate the issue at this time. At some point my config to use the old video player was reset, and the new player has not frozen on me since.
This is happening to me as well. I’ve opened my own thread w/ logs for this
@DaveBinM can you advise if you’re still looking into this issue. New player is still timing out on me after ~10 minutes, old player will reliably make it > 30 minutes but still happens after that. I can get server + client logs. Here is a bunch of logs for it happening.
logging.txt (1.2 MB)
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-08-30_02-20-44.zip (5.6 MB)
Server (docker): 1.20.1.3252
Client (Shield Pro 2019): 8.5.1.19778
Would really, really, REALLY love for this to get fixed as in this state my expensive shield is basically pointless, my old HTPC and desktop clients don’t do this (same network, same server).
The server is a Xeon E3-1245v5, I get 400Mb+ over Wireless AC, and multiple windows clients have always been rock solid so its not the infra. Also as soon as I switch to the old player, its much better but I’ve still seen it happen at least once (takes > 30 minutes to stall on old player)
I have made a new thread as well so let me know which thread, in that one I have client logs but for SEEK crash not just stop for no reason like this thread is discussing.
I bought a Shield TV last week because I heard how awesome it was with Plex for 4K + Atmos UHD rips. Same problem as everyone else. Usually the movie starts fine. Sometimes it doesn’t. Stutters start. Then it eventually crashes. I had to switch to my Apple TV two nights in a row.
For employees who want to reproduce, I would suggest trying this with UHD MKV files. For me, it happened with both Jurassic Park and Top Gun. These were both 4K rips with the uncompressed 7.1 stream. All devices are wired w/ in-wall gigabit ethernet, and it was no problem w/ Apple TV so I know it isn’t a network issue.
Was this the Shield Pro, or Shield Tube? There are known issues with the Shield Tube playing high bitrate media. If so, please post in another thread, or start your own, as this thread is about playback issues with the Shield Pro.
I’ll have a look at that this week
Anything yet?
Really need to get this fixed somehow, freezing on even 1080p web-rips is a bit silly on something so pricey (shield) and its my primary use-case
Hey @DaveBinM any luck?
