Plex on Nvidia Shield 2019 Pro freezes after 11-13 minutes playback

This is my position too. Had the frustration with the new player issue which is now resolved but live TV playback is very sporadic. Seems to perform fine through HD homerun so Plex seems to be the common denominator for me at least.

Adding to this issue - I am also having this problem with my 2019 tube Nvidia shield. For me however, video freezes after 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc. there doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason behind it. When I switch to the old player I get the ā€œyour server is not fast enoughā€ error and the content freezes. I have this problem on the standard release AND the beta.

Plex Team, come on guys. You need to address this! People are pretty much dead in the water using the shield tube version. @DaveBinM Is there any update???

The Tube and the Pro have some rather different capabilities, so what is happening on one device may not be the same underlying issue on another. This thread is primarily about the Pro, as mentioned in the title. We have some fixes coming to address some performance issues on the Tube, however, we can’t reproduce the reported issues on the pro, and I’ve yet to receive any logs that help with investigating this issue. :man_shrugging:

I really do appreciate your reply. Thank you.

Any idea when the updates are going to roll out for the tube?

I can’t give a date, I’m afraid, but I think it should be in 8.1.0, there should be a release note related to memory requirements or something, I think

Wow this is great news (for the tube problems specifically). Thank you for sharing that some improvements are coming in 8.1.0! Unfortunately I already had such a poor tube experience that I went ahead and ordered a couple of Pros. So I really hope we can get to the bottom of these Pro freezes and stutters that others are reporting.

I’ll be glad to provide logs next week once my Pro arrives (Assuming I have any of these same issues)

I get that you can’t give a date but are we talking about a release in a few days or are we talking about weeks? Thanks again for all of your responses. It’s nice to know that someone is listening!

8.1 beta just dropped in the new release thread. Waiting for it to show up on the Google play store on my shield tube to see if it fixes my issues.

Checking it out now. here’s to a fix!

Hi Dave,
Just tried out 8.1.0.17650 and I’m still having a lot of stuttering in some of the high bitrate 4K MKV rips I have from my UHD discs (Jurassic Park, Bad Boys). There does seem to be some improvement, as some other files that previously would crash immediately upon trying to play them (some of the Dolby Vision m2ts trailers) are now playing. (At least for now, sometimes these memory issues take a little while to show up. I did a fresh reboot of my shield tv to try to get the play store to pick up the plex app update).

During the stutters, the controls tend to become unresponsive as well. Can’t pause, go back to menu, etc. I’ve only been trying with the new player so far. I’ll start doing some testing with the old player next. So maybe a minor improvement, but not a fix from what I can tell so far. Let me know if you want more specifics or logs.

EDIT: I take that back. Bad Boys just crashed when trying to play it. Adding the log now

OK so some better news with the old player, but its not all perfect. The Jurassic Park 4K MKV movie played well, no stuttering or dropped frames or choppiness (I specifically look in the 7 to 12min mark where they are excavating the dinosaur skeleton, and grant taunts the little child). Also the Bad Boys 4K MKV movie played well too.

What didn’t work well, was while either clip was playing, if I pushed the up arrow to bring up the menu and check the timestamp, and then chose either the audio or video settings (to potentially change video quality or change the audio stream). It would immediately crash (even before selecting anything different, or upon hitting the back arrow and not selecting anything new). I got this to happen 4 out of the 6 times I tried it (Across the 2 video clips).

After those crashes and app restarts, I went back to some of my dolby vision demo clips. This time the LG Amaze demo clip crashed immediately (which was odd since it played ok with the new player before). After the app restarted again, I gave it another go and it worked the 2nd time around with no stuttering.

So my conclusions in the brief 30m i’ve been playing is that beta 8.1.0 with the new player (Default) is still a giant stuttering/crashing mess. With the old player, some of the problematic high bitrate MKVs play better now, as long as you don’t bring up the menu while its playing and try to change the audio stream or video quality. And some other content is still crashing immediately upon trying to play it (even with the old player)

I’ve reported this to some of our engineers who worked on this. Thanks for the report! Glad to hear it’s improved somewhat, but there are certainly some cases with high bitrate content where it’s still obviously not optimal (Jurassic Park III at 83.8Mbps is my normal stress test).

Thanks for staying on top of this and keeping us informed. I just tried Jurassic Park III out of curiosity, and it crashed immediately upon trying to play the file. I’m attaching another log file. This includes the JP III crash upon playing, as well as some of the other crashes when bringing up the audio/video options in the menu (while the file is still playing in the background, for both Jurassic Park 1 and Bad Boys). Please pass it on to the engineers.

@DaveBinM I am also still getting choppiness and crashes with the 8.1.0.17650 beta.

I just posted my logs to this thread where I have been tracking my issues over the past month:

This is on the Shield Tube, yes?

Yes, I am using the Nvidia Shield TV (2019) tube.

@DaveBinM Any idea why high bitrate material works fine on the nvidia shield non-pro (tube) thru Kodi with the Plex Addon? To me that suggests there must not be anything specifically wrong with the hardware in the shield tube itself, but instead something about the Plex app on that hardware. To me this is hopeful in that there should be a software solution to this. Perhaps the kodi app just does a better job of managing the lower amount of RAM in the shield tube than the native plex app?

PS I tried all the same files I was having trouble with using the native plex app in Kodi with the plex addon today (Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park 3, Bad Boys, etc). I’m using passthrough of the audio so i’m still getting TrueHD/DTS:X and 4K HDR. Refresh rate switching down to 24p is also working properly. No stuttering, no crashes, no lip sync issues either. Everything is silky smooth!
The only thing this kodi solution does not support is dolby vision passthrough, so while my dolby vision test clips from LG played ok, they did not trigger dolby vision on my LG OLED.

I’d suggest others having issues (pro or non-pro) might want to try this setup as well for debug purposes. As this definitely can help you rule out any question about your plex server or your network/infrastructure/AV equipment. If everything works fine in Kodi + Plex add-on, then you can conclude the issue is most definitely with the native plex app itself. (not to mention this gives you an interim solution until Plex can resolve the issue)

Kodi works fundamentally different than Plex. So comparing the two isn’t going to help and doesn’t allow for any conclusion on why Plex doesn’t work for you.

We agree there should be a software solution to this, we’re still investigating how to resolve this.
