You can check the properties of the MKV file. For me for Dolittle it shows 56312 Kbps Total bitrate under Video. Audio bitrate is 2916 Kbps. Plex scales that up quite a bit it seems
Wow, really? What 4K movies are you checking that are only 22? 22Mbps is quite low, some regular (non-4k) blurays have higher bitrates than that. Some of the problematic 4K titles I’ve had issues with Jurassic Park (60.8Mbps), Jurassic Park III (83.6Mbps), Bad Boys (96.7Mbps). Keep in mind the bitrates i’m reporting are the average over the whole film, since HEVC uses variable bitrate encoding, scene by scene it can change which is why sometimes most of a film can behave ok and then a certain scene can cause a stutter or crash.
Bitrate is very meaningful, even with today’s codecs. From a display quality point of view, it is noticeable especially if you have a large 75" + display. From a device perspective, It will directly impact the compute power and memory footprint needed to transfer and decode the stream. I just double checked my entire library and almost every single bluray disc backup I have is over 22mbps, and most 4k discs are over 40 or 50mbps. So again I have to ask, what 4k movies or 4k files are you playing that are only 22mbps? Are these real uhd bluray disc backups or some garbage files you downloaded off the net, like Netflix rips? I’m not surprised things are working OK for you on the tube with 4k files that are only 22mbps. That’s not even as taxing as a true 1080p bluray stream, let alone the high bitrate 4k files the rest of us are struggling with in plex on the tube.
Haha OK, keep dodging the question… What’s the source of your 4k files?
Facing this same issue on tube as well. The same movie plays flawlessly using infuse on my Apple TV. Yes, there is no Dolby Atmos on Apple TV hit HDR is still present.
I’m recommending folks look into jellyfin. Its completely free and open source, and has hdr tonemapping on its feature list coming up. I’ll report back after I test with my tube to see if the 4k crashing is gone, but I’m getting tired of Plex not responding to these common complaints on the forums or taking them seriously.
Keeping an eye on this…thanks.
So, what is the consensus? I would hate to have to just sell the tube and buy the Pro. But, Pro owners say things are running flawlessly.
I had a tube, and ended up buying a pro. Pro has been working great for me, none of the stuttering or crashes i had daily on my tube. But now i’m hitting other limitations like the HDR tonemapping when transcoding issue…
I have the tube. It has gotten better with UHD HDR content. But, occasionally the new player doesn’t apply proper tone mapping and appears washed out. A reboot of Plex or the Shield usually resolves it. And I don’t transcode audio or video. If this is still an issue on the Pro I will hold off.
Have also a tube 2019.
My Pms is running on a DS918+.
The Nvidia shield is just a hype. I am very disappointed.
No stable 4K with Atmos. Same as most other users.
Nvidia you failed here completely.
P.S: Unfortunately i can not write in that topic anymore: TrueHD, HDMI on LG OLED but @TeknoJunky wrote that the solution shall be great.
Well i have a 2019 LG OLED 4K, a Canton Smart 10 Atmos soundbar and now a Nvidia Shield TV Tube.
The PMS is running as mentioned on a DS 918+ synology.
The equipment ( nvidia shield + 4k/hdr/atmos receiver + 4k tv ) is powerful, but not running stable
I don’t think it is the fault of Nvidia, because Kodi works flawlessly with UHD HDR Atmos content. I think it’s more the lack of collaboration of Plex and Nvidia on resolving the issue
Hmm, i would be willing to move from Plex to Kodi.
Even i am since 8 years with Plex and have lifetime pass. But having high quality without of lagging is way more important than any loyality to a company.
What do you propoes? Is Kodi with the plex plugin plug & play?
the tube has less ram than the shield pro.
that is part of the problem with high bit rate atmos on the tube.
I have both tube and pro, while the tube works great for almost all other content, for high bit rate 4k remuxes, I have to use pro to avoid drop outs.
unfortunately its a known issue, and the plex/shield teams are aware and working to optimize as much as possible, however nvidia themselves screwed everyone by putting less ram into the tube.
whether or not the tube will ever be able to handle those difficult files, is still unknown.
if you can still return/exchange it, I would recommend replacing the tube with the pro model.
either way, both shield is the ONLY streaming device with truehd+atmos pass through support.
I’d recommend using PKC (PlexKodiConnect) instead of the Plex plugin. This allows your Plex system to be mapped to the Kodi system so The Plex limitations causing the issues are removed. The plugin had the same issues as the app for me.
Note: I have a Nvidia Shield TV 2019 Tube and I play compressed (less than 20Mb/s) 4k HDR mkv files
I tried both. Okay it’s working and the PKC is really better.
But both are from comfortability far away from plex. Even when you have fast user switching, or you don’t want so spent Dozens of hours wasting time in configuration.
And I know what I am talking because I was XBMC User from the first hours more than one decade ago. On old 10.4 iMac and on win 2k / 7
Decided then to move to plex and it’s still better then kodi.
I 100% prefer to use the Plex app. I only use Kodi with PKC for 4k videos. I use Plex for all other videos.
For what it is worth, I just sold the non Pro Tube version of the Shield and got the Pro version. Magically, all my UHD streaming issues disappeared. My server is on a gigabit Ethernet connected LAN and my primary issues have been on uncompressed UHD streams (some over 100mbps). I used to get stuttering, hit or miss HDR tone mapping (washed out at times), audio cut outs, can’t pause/freezes, etc. Rebooting Plex or the Shield would resolve some of these temporarily.
After getting the Pro device, things have stabilized. UHD content starts immediately, I can pause and FF/REW, HDR starts perfectly and Atmos audio doesn’t cut out.
I really believe there is an issue with the tube version of the Shield and how Plex treats it. Main differences between the tube and pro are memory (2gb vs 3gb) and the OS (32bit vs 64bit). This could mean Plex didn’t account for the differences in their app development in terms of optimization.
so please just confirm, ALL problems with PLEX app on the tube 2019 are gone when you used the pro 2019 version, nothing wrong, playback is perfect ?? @Psuhammer
sorry to make you say things twice, but I just returned my tube and looking for this to confirm my issues are going to be gone, at the moment I use an Apple tv 4K and nothing of the problems or issues I had is happening with identical playback setup, I believe our issues with the tube 2019 are because of the 32 bit OS for the tube.
Yes, I stand by that post. Of course, things like lack of HDR in YouTube aren’t resolved but that is a limitation in the hardware, I believe.
All Plex related issues have resolved. I love that I can FF and rewind UHD now.
