Plex on Nvidia Shield

ETA for the fix? This is a really critical bug that makes Plex unusable for Shield owners… Need a quick fix!

I understand the frustration of all my fellow Shield users but I have to say this is only the first time in 10+ years of being a Plex user that I’ve experienced a serious issue with the server software.

Hoping it will be fixed timely and in the next release!

In the mean time I’m taking a break from watching TV shows…lol.

same here devastated

can you make it easier for nvidia shield users with pms to back up a database and easily restore it if we lose our libraries because of issues like this

Wow nice fix but a little more complicated than it needs to be, I have 6 shields. The update can easily be run by using a computer, going to the playstore and telling it to update the shield remotely. This has been a bug for years.

Isn’t it already possible by moving the server data to the user accessible storage?

General guide for database backup restore:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/202485658-restore-a-database-backed-up-via-scheduled-tasks/

Don’t forget to backup the metadata folders as well if you want to keep that too.

While we have your attention can you also look into since the OREO / Update to external HD support and this bad update the PMS on the shield goes offline every time the Shield sleeps. It used to not before. What settings to we have to set? or is there a way to interrupt this activity. Sometimes I have to go into the settings and tell it to turn on explicitly.

PMS was running great when I got this thing last November besides the synch on the 16GB never fully working… After awhile we have these issues and the debug logging bogging it down making the thing un-useable.

I went from telling all my friends that Shield + PMS was amazing and everyone to get it, to being super annoyed at my family complaining it never works now and to fix it (a new annoyance in my life). I know you have so many platforms to support and only so many staff. But it leaves a bad taste in the mouth to have Nvidia promoting greater support for external Plex storage requirements (on their own forums), and do all these updates to just have everything working way worse. It seems you two must talk to each-other and know this an important eco system for both platforms.

Plex is getting to the point of polish where it isn’t a bunch of people that love nerding out building custom NAS boxes, and has been marketed to people to who just want something that works and they don’t have to do much of anything.

Everything was working fine until this update. I too use my nvidia shield tv as a plex server that communicates with a SMB hard-disk which is connected to a wireless router. Thank goodness I actually searched the forum rather than deleting/repairing my database. I was actually thinking that my HDD was failing.

Is there anyway you guys at Plex can implement some kind of notification system so that we can be made aware of any issues in the future? This issue took up nearly four hours of my day already.

Same version number as the one before (1.13.4.5271) but as the Plex employee told in https://forums.plex.tv/t/error-scanning-files-on-nvidia-shield/285600/84: It’s technically a different version number behind the scenes on the Google Play store, so it should be flagged as an update.

Mine updated automatically after closing Google Play store and reopening…

You can see the version number in the details but also update date… juli 24

FWIW, I was also able to trigger the update remotely via the web by opening play.google.com in a desktop browser, searching for plex media server, clicking “install” and then selecting my shield device. This was enough to remotely trigger the update (and then I was able to start re-scanning my libraries once the server came back online)

That fixed the scanning problem but I do not have LIVETV… on my Shield… I was able to watch LIVETV on my Shield running the server and not scan … now it is the opposite can scan but not watch LIVETV …

Edit uninstalled updates redid it again and now it’s working both LiveTV and Scanning.

I’ve tried this on my shield but it doesn’t work unfortunately if you have any tips I’m all ears sick of having this happen to me
