Plex on Samsung and LG Smart TV become slow and lagging interface

I have Samsung tv and I have the same problem. Please make it run smoothly again. Fixing the problem shouldn’t be so hard.

I very rarely comment in these sorts of forums. Running 5.29.1 on Samsung TV from 2018ish. People always complain and say “oh just use a Chromecast, Tizen sucks as a smart service platform”. But it’s been great for me. YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video are all quite snappy (Prime in general needs to be worked on anyway), and I installed a Github user’s amazing app called smarttv-twitch to get a snappy and very functional Twitch GUI. All of this can be controlled with the simple and tiny Samsung remote.

All of this was great. Until this Plex update. It used to feel so butter smooth and as premium-feeling as Netflix. Now it is as sluggish as the half-baked “Android TV” implementations on cheap TVs where menus take many seconds to open, animations are painfully slow, and graphics elements take way too long to load.

Perhaps it is already an option, but please just let me use an older version of the software. My TV was so minimal in bulls**t and was extremely snappy and functional until this abysmal update.

I agree with everything you said.
My 2016 Samsung TV has the oldest version of Tizen supported by Plex, and probably the worst hardware too.
Yet the Youtube and Netflix apps are very usable. (I too use the great sideloaded Twitch client!)
Plex however is a complete mess performance wise. (And subtitles frequently stop working in the middle of playback).

Totally agree even though I don’t have a samsung tv (i have a LG OLED C7) the situation is completely the same as your description.

Plex Admin if you read this. Could you please reply with a simple sentence informing us of the situation? Many thx.

We’re aware of the performance issues, and we are looking into them.

@sLumpy, thank you!

Thanks sLumpy. Pretty sure that’s all we wanted to hear :+1:

I’m having extreme performance issues with Plex on my Samsung UE43nu7475 TV (2018 model) as well.

It’s running Plex client version 5.29.1, platform version 4.

The client is so sluggish it’s a struggle to input the PIN code to unlock my user account, and once all the media data loads it’s even worse.

Same here.

The Small subtitles font looks just like the Normal…

Very frustrating when you consider that this is a ridiculously simple issue to fix: just change the font’s size…

What about the font’s size issue?

It’s SO SIMPLE to fix…

Thank you for your reply.

It’s already fixed and will be in the next release.

I have a 2016 Samsung and i now have NO plex access all of the sudden, model Un65js8500fxza. Earlier this week I could no longer access Plex on my TV it would just crash. I deleted the App from my TV and downloaded it again it is ver 2.012 from 8/20.28 ( very old ) but it all that was available . I go to connect the TV app to my account and there is no connect code given on my TV to put in my browser to connect to my account. has anyone else had this issue? is there a fix?

Hi Slumpy,
Sorry for asking but there are 2 things being discussed right now.
Did you mean the subs problem is fixed or the Laggy problem or both?

It was a direct reply to the font size issue.
No way have they fixed the performance issue.

To be fair. We don’t know that they haven’t fixed the performance issue in the next release.

Let’s hope they’ll roll back an old version if it’s isn’t fixed yet. This lagging is driving me crazy… It takes over a minute before a series becomes responsive and I can start an episode.

Is there any ETA or timeline when will this issue be fixed? I wish they make an official statement on this matter.

Adding to this, running Plex on a Samsung Q85R and PMS on UnRAID.

Scrolling between movies posters is just really clunky.

The most notable delay, is when a movie is clicked on, loading the actors row takes a good couple of seconds.

The experience feels worse on a movie library, compared to TV. It has been progressively getting worse as opposed to been triggered by a specific update.

Same issue here, scrolling through posters is sluggishly slow. It’s been like this for a while now… @sLumpy
