I’m kinda new to Plex. I am having an issue with my library on my Synology Nas. i created a file with read write perms for Plex. copied the video files i wanted in a directory structure i was happy with into that file. the vide files then promptly disappeared from that file, Plex took those files and stuck them in an unknown section of my NAS drive and i cannot view or browse them in the DSM file manager app or with windows explorer when going to that file on that share. I can still view the files in the plex apps on my devices. When it took the files i could see in the synology dashboard that it was working and processing the titles of some of the videos i had in there. i could hear the drives working full bore. i just cannot get to those files and edit them. move them or add to them. i am attempting to add a screenshot of a WinDirStat i wan on that drive to demonstrate what i am seeing. the large yellow square is the unknown files section. before you ask no this isn’t a ransomware issue. a virus scan of my entire drive comes back clean. i am hoping i just have a wrong setting set and someone can walk me through undoing it. my main concern is i am planning to upgrade to a larger NAS in a few months. how would i migrate these files over to a new NAS if i cannot access them?
Respectfully
- Plex does NOT move your files around
- Ransomware will – and that’s all I’ll say about that at this time.
- Looking at what’s happening ON the Synology FROM a windows machine over the network is useless.
- You need to use the Synology FileStation file manager to example the physical structure as it exists on the NAS.
Q: Did you encrypt the disk on the NAS ? An encrypted disk , when mounted incorrectly from the network side, will be “unknown”.
1 and 2. something did. As I stated a full Bit-defender virus scan of my NAS came up clean. And my NAS is not accessible outside my LAN. Synology is configured to not be accessible outside my LAN and my firewall is configured to block incoming connections to it. plus as i also stated i can still view the files from plex. indicating plex knows where those files are.
3 and 4. i have looked at it both from the share side and from within logged into the NAS through my browser. navigating to that file shows only the audio podcasts file that i had also copied there to add to plex. only that did not get taken.
Answer: no i did not encrypt this drive. also the share mounts have not changed since this happened.
Was this scan run by DSM or by your computer over the LAN?
i ran the built in synology antivirus first. then i ran a bit defender scan on that share from my windows machine.
How are your synology volumes organized (RAID level , etc), list of shared folders (except private ones) ?
its a DS220j with 2 6Gig Segate NAS drives in SHR 1 drive fault tolerance(Basically RAID 1). all as a single share.
I’d like you to create a Scheduled Task, User-script, which looks at the Homes area to see what’s going on in there.
We’ll do it at the bare Linux level so it’s not obfuscated by DSM or Windows.
- The scheduled task, user script
- Runs as
rootusername - Emails you the results
- The contents of the script are (Copy/paste this into the “Task Settings” window
#!/bin/bash
cd /var/services
du -ms */
cd homes
ls -la
du -ms *
Save the task.
Run it one time.
The results will be delivered to your email.
Please share the results here.
Your output will be slightly different but will look something like this:
bash-4.4# cd /var/services
bash-4.4# du -ms */
1 homes/
118487 music/
501 pgsql/
8107 photo/
1 tmp/
13983319 video/
1 web/
bash-4.4# cd homes
bash-4.4# ls -la
