Plex performance issues across site-to-site VPN

Server Version#: 4.46.2

I have 2 locations that I connected via a VPN so that when I’m remote I can access the devices easily. I’m using OpenVPN and have Ubiquiti USG routers to create the tunnel. When the VPN is up and running I keep getting buffering. The source for my Plex is Gigabit fiber, so there is more than sufficient bandwidth. When I stop the VPN which forces traffic through the public internet I have no issues streaming. I’m currently troubleshooting the VPN performance issues, but I was wondering if there was a way for force PLEX to use the internet and not think my server is local?

From the client side (Android) there’s a Quality Settings, set the Home Streaming quality same as Remote streaming.

I’ve done that already. The problem is that while I can stream original quality, my VPN tunnel is causing slowness in my connection. I don’t want to transcode, especially since I have adequate bandwidth between the sites. No VPN = original quality just fine and plex shows as remote; VPN on and I get buffering, plex shows as local. I know this isn’t specifically a plex problem, but if I could tell plex not to use the VPN tunnel it would solve the problem of having lower performance over the VPN tunnel.

Try adding your encryption domains in the settings where it says something like “consider these networks local”
