Plex picking up movie as TV show

I use PlayOn to download movies and TV shows. You can only setup PlayOn to record them to one folder. So, I have that folder listed in Plex’s TV Shows and Movies. Most of the time, it knows what it is. But I’ve got one movie called “Doctor Strange (2016) - PG-13.mp4”. It shows up in the movies and gets a good match. But, it also shows up in the TV Shows. This also happens on YouTube videos as well, shows up in both.

Other than a better naming convention, which I cannot control with PlayOn, is there a way to remove it from the TV Shows without removing it from Movies?

Plex needs tv shows and movies segregated. I suggest that you download those files to a location outside of where Plex scans, and then move them to the correct spot.

I really wish for a solution that doesn’t require access to the server and something that’s more automatic. I’m sure this is a problem for any outside content. As I said, it works most of the time. Just need a way to override it, from an App.

Folders should not overlap TV show libraries should only point at TV show folders and movie libraries should only point at movie folders.

For what you are trying to do it would be best to let play on record to a directory that Plex does not see and then you can move the files to appropriate Plex library directories. If I remember correctly how PlayOn names and structures their directories it should even be possible to automate the process.

I know if I were interested I could write a batch file to do that under Windows.
Hint: PlayOn always, if my memory is correct, has the form “SxxEyy” in the TV show file name and all TV shows are in a directory with “Season” in the directory name.

If there’s not already a way to do this, then I would like to request it as a new feature.

What’s funny, is this file doesn’t have the SxxEyy in the name at all.

That does not matter. If it is in a Plex TV directory then Plex will try its best to match it to a TV show and, even if it cannot it still will include it it the listings for whatever kind of library it is seen in. If it is seen in two different libraries Plex will try its best to match it twice. That is why Plex has an absolute requirement that TV shows and movies be kept totally separate.

Overlapping different library types is simply poor practice and very easy to avoid.
