I have an eight part documentary in my TV Shows Folder.
It is in the folder layout:
T:\TV Shows\New York A Documentary Film
One of the episodes is:
New York A Documentary Film E01.mkv
It shows up perfectly in the TV Shows section. Plex recognizes it and separates the episodes with descriptions and everything.
But, each of the individual episodes also show up as separate movies in the Movies: section.
I tried deleting each item in Movies, but that actually deleted the file from the TV Shows section (ouch!).
How do I get it to display properly as just a TV show?
Thanks,
John
I suspect you have linked that folder to both libraries. Can you double-check this? (in the library context menu click ...
> Manage Library
> Edit
and check the Add Folders
section).
Any other tv-shows probably didn’t show up earlier because Plex usually ignores files following a tv-show naming schema in a movie-type library. With that particular show you used a deviating naming schema which is resulting in the files being cataloged by both libraries.
Edit/PS:
Mini-series like this should be treated as single-season tv-shows, following the regular tv-show naming. Your current naming might not work if you ever are to rebuild your tv-show library / scanning it from scratch.

Thanks so much for responding.
I am afraid I don’t know enough to fully understand your directions.
- I went to TV Shows>Manage Library etc. I found some listings that didn’t match the actual file structure like: T:\Alienist when it should be T:\TV Shows\Alienist. There were about 10 entries like this that were wrong. I left these alone. I have many, many more folders below T:\TV Shows, none of them were in this list. I added the correct path to New York…
There were no listing under Movies> Manage Libraries etc.
I added the season 01 to the directory structure under TV Shows and re scanned.
Once I was done with all of this, it showed correctly in TV Shows, as it did before, but the eight separate episodes were still in the Movies section, now showing as the “most recently added”.
Sorry, I must be doing something stupid, or missing something. I just don’t know what.

You’re looking in the right place… and I think we got to a source of the problem.
- Plex doesn’t need/want you to include individual tv-show folders – you should only link the folder that contains those tv-show folders!
In the example posted above, your Plex tv-shows library should point toT:\TV Shows\
; not as per the example you gave toT:\Alienist\
- The library folder should be an actual folder – not a drive letter!
So getting back to your example… instead of addingT:\Alienist\
(the tv-show folder) you’d have to addT:\
. This will however give Plex the hiccups – so for things to work smoothly, best move theAlienist\
folder intoT:\TV Shows\
and only addT:\TV Shows\
to the Plex tv-show library.
As for the issue you described in your original post.
Can you please check the same Add Folders
section in the movie library? That’s the one I suspect to be linked to T:\TV Shows\
as well.
While it’s perfectly ok to include one folder to multiple libraries (for whatever reason) – you should not mix different media types in a single library. So best remove T:\TV Shows\
from the movie library!
That did it.
Thank you so much for your kind patient help.
I now have Folders for TV set to T:\TV Shows and Movies set to T:\Movies.
BTW, Moves had been set to just T:\ so it was looking at everything.
The TV shows are no longer in the Movies.
I also now understand the logic behind the “Folders” setting.
Thanks again for the super help.
