Plex Picture Very Dark on new Apple TV 4K Gen 6, (on an Epson's homelite 5040UB Projector.) and some flat panels

Server Version#: 1.23.5.4862
Player Version#: 7.20 (422)
I have an Epson homelite 5040UB Projector, connected to the new Apple TV, Gen 6. The issue is that my old Apple TV Gen 5, played back 4K & 1080 content with normal brightness, (all different streaming services look the same, when comparing Plex to streaming services like Disney +, Netflix, Hulu, Etc.

Now with this new Apple TV Gen 6, all movies & shows are much darker. I’ve tried making adjustments, (in the Apple TV settings) using “Match Content/Match Dynamic Range”, also went into Plex’s settings and switch “Display Type” to SDR, being that Apple TV doesn’t recognize HDR playback with this projector, but to no avail.

Does anyone else out there have this combination of devices, and if so, have you figured out why Plex Players image, is so dark?

This only happen in Plex Player, all other streaming players play at normal brightness, when compared to the same shows of other streaming players, (on the Epson’s homelite 5040UB Projector.).

Apple TV Gen 4 & Plex Player, still has no issues with Epson’s homelite 5040UB Projector.

Here is a shot of the same 4K picture on Plex, (the dark one) and on Disney+, the normal brighter one, (Above.)

Someone mentioned in a post elsewhere, that developers must us HomeKit from apple for compatibility, does Plex use HomeKit?

I don’t have a solution, but found your post after I just hooked up 2 of newest Apple TV 4 models and had the issue and went searching. The 5th gen doesn’t have the issue. I still have 2 of those. These new 6th gen, and only in Plex, and not with all content in Plex, display content so dark that it’s not watchable. I don’t think it has to do with your projector. I’m seeing it on LCD TVs.

Would you please post the model and make of the flat panel LCD screen exhibiting this issue please.

Hopefully Plex programmers can use it to find a solution. Odds are they may have access to that LCD TV and can use it to work on this issue, and maybe fix the projector issue as well.

I’m still thinking after what I have read, that they may not have incorporated HomeKit into the Plex player.

Hello. I was experiencing the same issue with the new Gen 6 Apple TV 4K (upgrade from Gen 4 HD) with an LG C7 OLED.

Though I only had issues with 4K content, 1080 content was fine.

I did two things to fix:

  1. Turn on the HDMI Ultra Deep colour setting
  2. Replace the 1.2 HDMI with a high speed I had lying around (no version number)

Not sure if the cable made a difference, but turning on the setting instantly fixed the brightness issue.

Ok, fixed the issue, for the Epson homelite 5040UB Projector

Final settings in both Apple TV Get 6 as well as the settings in Plex Player are as follows.
In Plex Settings:
Under “Video Quality”
Auto Adjust Quality set to: OFF

Under “Advanced”
Display Type set to Auto

Apple TV 4K (GEN 6) SETTINGS
IN “Video and Audio”
Under “Video”
Enable “HDR”
Format “4K SDR”
HDMI Output “YCbCr”
Chroma "4:4:4, (USING HIGH SPEED HDMI CABLE)

Match Content “Range & Frame Rate” both ON"

FYI: In that match content screen underneath those two options, If you have any unverified video formats they will appear down there. I went through each one and had the player verify each video format. Now there’s nothing listed beneath these two options. That’s the only other thing that I changed today other than Setting the “display type” in Plex to “auto”

I did this part to no avail. However, after this I ordered a new HDMI cable. I was skeptical that would help. But I was wrong. I plugged in the new cable today and the picture is fine now.

Thank you very much for this.

I’m experiencing this as well. Latest gen Apple TV. All 4K content is extremely dark. Blu ray rips are unaffected. Hope this is resolved soon.
