Anyone experienced this issue with the latest Plex update on the Apple TV?
Not sure if it’s my TV playing up, or Plex… I don’t seem to have the same issue in Netflix.

I have the same problem. Samsung 4k HDR TV. If I play the same content on Infuse or MRMC the blacks are completely black. It is so distracting in a dark room that I had to stop using the Plex player.
The image posted could have been from my TV!
The same problem was posted here:
but was never addressed.
I have had this for a while, its mostly noticeable on dark/black backgrounds but I never got an answer. @sergiou87, perhaps you can shed some light or help loop someone else in?
Thanks, turning off HDR did solve the issue. Is this a Plex bug? What’s the underlying cause here?
It seems like this is a Plex bug since it doesnt happen with the native ATV player, but we’d probably need someone from the client team at Plex to take a look at it. @anon18523487, do you have any idea? Or who would by chance? This is quite annoying. It happens on non HDR content even.
I don’t support Apple TV but this sounds like an issue of the device or TV trying to playback HDR content that isn’t supported. I found this on Apple’s site. Have you gone through this to make sure what is supported.
When you first connect your Apple TV 4K to a 4K television capable of HDR10 or Dolby Vision, you may be prompted to run a short display test for these formats. Follow the onscreen instructions to run the test, and confirm that you have a clear picture. If Apple TV 4K is unable to confirm that your television can display Dolby Vision or HDR10, it will automatically revert back to the mode it was previously using.
To confirm which video mode your Apple TV 4K is using, go to Settings > Video and Audio. From here, you can manually select a display format.
Provide me the XML from PMS so we can check what format your file is. Investigate Media Information and Formats | Plex Support

Attached an XML. It happens on every movie I own, regardless of file type.
Yes, I just did that test again, works fine. Apple TV set to use HDR and test passed, my TV has no issues with it.
Ok, that’s not even HDR so that wasn’t it. Your XML shows you have 2 versions. Which one were you playing?
The h264 version has 5 ref frames. Typically, the limit is 4.
The other version is an older mpeg4 file, but doesn’t say what type.
Both of these can have issues.
It was the 1080p version that I was playing. But I just re-enabled HDR on the Apple TV and Samsung TV and it’s working again now without the dots… So I don’t think this is a reproducible bug unfortunately, but at least the fix appears to be to toggle HDR, so at least there’s that.
Ok. As long as it’s working.
