Plex PS3 App connects to PC Plex Server, but not Mac

Hi There.

I primarily want to use Plex Media Server on my Mac running OSX Lion to handle my media.

I set up the installation, and was able to get everything running, or so it seemed.

I installed the app on my PS3, and entered the required pin, etc. (On a side note, I can see the Plex server in my PS3 DLNA area, but the folders under there take an eternity to load, if they ever do complete, it gives an error 6001)

Anyways, once I’ve entered the pin, it disappears from the PS3 screen, and it seems to be loading, but then it pops up and says that it could not connect to the server, or the requested media type is incorrect? IT gives the options “Retry” “Home” and “Sign Out”

I have tried all three options numerous times, and have re-installed both the PS3 app, and the media server on the mac. The same error is always present.

I decided to test it with my PC, and set up Plex Media server on there and disconnected the Mac Plex server. Suddenly the app on the PS3 could access the media server (it had no content, so I couldn’t check functionality, but it got further than the Mac Plex).

My mac has the up to date plex media server, as well as my PS3. The app does have remote access enabled, and all is green.

My network works as follows:

INTERNET >WIFI ROUTER A>(WIFI BRIDGE)MAC SERVER, PS3

The mac Plex server connects to my second router via Ethernet, The PS3 does the same. Both of these devices have full access to the internet, and no issues are present. The PS3 CAN access a normal DLNA based server like XBMC on running on the Mac (obviously it is not running with plex, but just as a test.

Any ideas to what the issue could be?

Do you have stealth mode enabled on the mac in Security Center…or whatever they call it (sorry can’t remember)?

You can also go to the Console I think its called and look at the firewall logs under /var/log , to see if you find something fishy.

Hi Rabco. I will try that, but in the meanwhile, I have another complexity to add.

I removed all my media tonight and started with a empty mac server. Suddenly, the ps3 could connect. I proceeded to add my media again, ensuring it was correctly named, or so I assume from following the support documents. At first, whilst the library was updating, I could access the server, could see the posters and info, and all worked fine. Then I navigated to the home screen, and got the same error as before. Cant get back on now.

Something in my file system seems to be destroying the server? Are there any absolute no go file types?

There is nothing “destroying” the server if: localhost:32400/web or 127.0.0.1, etc , can manage the server from a browser when accessed locally on the PMS (regardless of PS3 problems). So do verify that.

Plex used to act weird “I assume it still does” if you have special characters and stuff in your titles. Basically if you stick with spaces, periods, and hyphens you will be fine.

I honestly don’t have anything to replicate your setup, and I haven’t run PMS on a Mac since like v0.8 or something. Surprisingly there is also no support articles for a PS3/PS4.

I think it comes down to something blocking local discovery. At a minimum atleast configure the plex server to not require authentication on your local subnet: (PMS>Server>Network>Show Advanced) put in your local subnet aka 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 or whatever.
