I have been using Plex Media Server with two Chromecasts for about a year now, with next to zero problems. Over the last couple months, a highly annoying problem crept up and is starting to happen so frequently that it's become unusable.
What's happening is that you can watch a video and it will just suddenly stop, like the video is over. I have been told a number of things to try, but have gotten no where so far as to alleviating the issue.
Some of the video files that fail now used to work fine in Plex before
Files that fail come from numerous sources in numerous format (home videos, cell phone videos, ripped videos, etc..)
Files that fail will not always fail
Files don't always fail in the same spot
My computer does not sleep when this happens
My hard drives aren't sleeping when this happens
All video files that fail in Plex play flawlessly through other apps that cast video to Chromecast
It has been suggested that the files are corrupt and/or sending back an incorrect EOF, but the attached logs show that doesn't appear to be the case. The only sketchy thing I see is:
Jun 23, 2015 22:05:36:141 [4524] DEBUG - Shutting down idle session dc8iwfelmobt9 (idle time is 180 seconds)
Jun 23, 2015 22:05:36:141 [4524] DEBUG - Killing job.
Jun 23, 2015 22:05:36:141 [4524] DEBUG - Job was already killed, not killing again.
Jun 23, 2015 22:05:36:141 [4524] DEBUG - Stopping transcode session dc8iwfelmobt9
Jun 23, 2015 22:05:36:157 [30448] ERROR - PeekNamedPipe failed: 0x6d
Aside from this issue, Plex is great. It has all the features I like and need which is why I bought the mobile app... Unfortunately, it's become unusable. Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this issue?
Are you watching videos on your iPhone? I am having a virtually identical problem, and like you it was working perfectly for over a year when this suddenly started happening.

It's happening for me a number of ways:
Casting video to one of my two Chromecasts via the Plex Android App
Casting video to one of my two Chromecasts via Plex on my laptop
Playing video on my Android Phone via the Plex Android App
I am to the point now where I am considering killing Plex completely off my machine and reinstalling fresh, but I would rather have a fix than going through that kind of hassle, especially if there is some underlying problem that may still linger.
I’m still having this issue on many video files… new ones, old one, doesn’t matter… I check the logs and they all look the like the one I attached above… can anyone help?!
I just starting getting this on Mac OS X 10.10 on 2 different Mac’s, 1 Windows 10 PC, and a Chromebook OS. It started within the last 2 or 3 updates. The only other commonality I can think of is I used Chrome Browser Version 44.0.2403.157 (64-bit) for them.
Anyone managed to solve this, all of my videos seem to stop after approx 5 minutes, never happened before, I have checked the video files and they play just fine with VLC so I’m happy the data is fine.
I have also lost the content in all of my folders, I can still see the headings, movies, TV shows etc but everything is blank.
I downloaded the latest home theatre player for Mac, all of my movies and TV shows are there but when I play any file the audio is overlaid with an unbearable white noise.
I had these symptoms and for me the problem was my Plex server (Windows Home Server 2011) was running out of space on the volume where Plex was storing its AppData. Space would drop to 0. Plex would bomb out. Then it would recover 200-300MB from doing something (purging logs or tmp files maybe not sure) but you could restart the video and I’d watch the free space wind down to 0 again. Anyway, I moved the working directory under Server Advanced settings to somewhere with more space and it has been fine since.
they added a subscription which makes you have to have it to play anything over a minute. without the subscription it will stop playing litterally after 1 minute and any photos will be watermarked by them

Didn’t see your post in tell after I made one and all I have to say is ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME? If this is true I am going to move over to Kodi due to Plex would seem it as its all about the $$$ now.
I am getting similar stops in the recent weeks too now. I run PMS on Windows Server 2016, Files on a Synology NAS via SMB share. I experienced the hangups in Chrome web player as well as when using the android app to stream to a chromecast. After the stop I can immediately restart the playback, It remembers the exact positions withing 2 or 3 seconds.

What on Earth are you talking about?! I have a Plex Pass, but I have other friends that don’t and this is not a thing.
i’m having that issue now. video is stopping on my laptop streaming to chromecast, android app to chromecast, and android app playing on my phone. plays relatively without issue on my Xbox One.
I’ve been having the same issue streaming remotely, its pretty random but often enough after 10-15 mins. Local playback works fine. I have yet to figure out a fix for it.
Having the exact same issue. Watching a movie almost 45-50 minutes it always stops. Looking at task manager it seems to stop decoding and only streams.
Normally my server is @ about 30-70% with 100% spikes while decoding handling things normally. But after careful inspection (and watching most of the star wars films) It seems at some point it just stops decoding and stays at a stable 25%~ while streaming till I get the error message “The server is not powerful enough to stream this content”.
I have streamed 1Mbps to 12 Mbps without a problem in the past with the current server setup. This feels like a definite Plex issue reading the rest of the comments.
