Plex refusing to use second HDHomeRun tuner

Hi all,

I’ve recently noticed that a lot of my Plex DVR recordings have been failing and it didn’t take long to work out why.

I have a HDHomeRun Connect Duo, for clarification it’s this one (HDHR5-2DT).

The recordings always fail when I’m watching live TV. So I went onto the tuner just before a recording was due to start to see what was going on. The second tuner always remains free and is never claimed by Plex. Meaning if I watch Live TV it cannot record.

I’m running PMS Version 1.13.2.5154 and the firmware on the HDHR5-2DT is 20180327. Plex is recognising that there are 2 tuners, it’s just not using the second.

I have successfully pulled two streams from the HDHomeRun using VLC, using both tuners. Just to check it’s not the HDHomeRun at fault.

Anyone else experienced this? I have tried removing and adding the tuner which didn’t help.

Many thanks for the help in advance.

Are you using Plex to watch Live TV or some other app that is using one of the Plex configured tuners? I have no problems watching Live TV and recording shows using all 3 of my HDHR tuner devices.

Hi. The recordings fail while I’m watching Live TV on Plex and the first tuner is in use.

This is what the tuners status is. Even though Tuner 1 is free, Plex won’t try and use it for whatever reason and the recording will fail.

Plex does not request a specific tuner, ie tuner 0, but makes a request to the tuner device. The device determines what tuner will be used or sends a rejection message to Plex if it is unable to fulfill the request. Would need to check the Plex Media Server log immediately after a failed recording to see why the recording failed.

The funny thing is sometimes when Plex fails to record a channel, it would still be able to tune in and watch it…
