Plex regularly stops working until restart

Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
Player Version#: 1.11.0.1215-1d8c460c
Hi, Had a problem for months now where Plex will suddenly become unable to be reached from any client device inside my network. If I stop and start the service, it works again just fine and yet will do this again from anything to 1 day to 1 week’s time.

I have read things and fiddled with stuff to try and work out what to do about this. I turned on logging and have been reading things I barely understand.

The NAS is a Synology DS1818+

The following excerpt from the logs may have something to do with it, I searched the forum saw someone else with this error, they talked about IPV6 issues for reasons I did not follow and turned it off. Didn’t find out if that helped. Incidentally IPV6 is off in my server settings and I do not make use of it on my LAN.

I hope I’ve provided the right detail & one of you excellent folk can help.

From the logs…

Hi,

Firstly, apologies for the forum foul, I’ll try and remember that.

I’ve done as you asked and have attached a zip file of the logs. It might interest you to know that the Plex server became unresponsive again some time between 01:00 and 08:30 today. I really appreciate any help you can give me.

If you would like any further info, please just ask and I’ll do all I can to supply.

ThanksLogs.zip|attachment (640.4 KB)

Just thought I’d say, I can’t see the uploaded file in the forum. Not sure if it takes time before it works or something or it didn’t work at all. I’ll check back later but if that isn’t normal I can upload again.
I tried the upload again. Here it is.
Logs.zip (640.4 KB)

Sorry, no I didn’t Migrate. I set it up fresh on the Synology NAS

Right, I’ll change the setting and wait for it to go wrong again & then re upload the logs

Hi, Plex worked fine since my last message until maybe 3-4 hours ago when I suddenly lost connection and found it could not be reached on any device again. I hope my log settings are correct this time round. Really appreciate the help. Logs.zip (4.5 MB)

Hi Trumpy81,

Thankyou very much for shedding some light on this. I understand how to re-encode and can get on with that.

I’d just like to ask a couple of questions so I can handle this properly myself from here on out.

I’ve got that I should be looking for ‘ffmpeg’ to search logs for this sort of error, in looking at the logs folder, there are lots of different sorts of log file i.e ‘Plex Crash Uploader’’ or ‘Plex Media Server’ is there one sort of log file that contains this sort of error or should I be searching across the board?

Can I just also check on the best procedure to replace .avi with .mp4 in Plex? It would seem most convenient to run Handbrake (on a Mac directly) converting the media files in the Plex library (in a network folder) but that might cause Plex issues? Should I instead be removing the offending files from the media library, ensuring Plex deletes them, convert them and then re-introduce them later?

Your help is much appreciated.

Hi Trumpy81,

It’s been some time but I followed your advice, I had an awful lot of encoding to do and plenty of careful replacing of files to fully banish all the .avi

I monitored errors a bit but once I was some way through the task noticed the freezing up was becoming very infrequent. Upon completion I’m getting perfect service and none of those errors.

So you totally put me on the right path & my problem is a thing of the past. Much appreciated!
