Hi have a Plex installed on my Qnap NAS and my Amazon Alexa can’t reach the server due to this error:
The Plex Skill needs to be able to remotely access your Plex Media Server in order to work properly.
Please verify that Settings > Server > Remote Access is enabled in the Plex Web App. You can also find more information about Remote Access at http://support.plex.tv
Checkout more about the Plex Skill by visiting http://plex.tv/alexa
Basically the remote access is not working on my Plex, there are many instructions for how to fix it, but I’m busy and can’t spend time in this.
You need to know how to configure my router and do port forwarding, you can connect to my PC via teamviewer.
Ill lead you to the water but you are gonna need to drink on your own.
I’ll teach you to fish instead of handing you a fish…
Take the green pill! Or is it the red??
That looks like a copy and paste to get your quantity of answers/posts up.
I understand what Nokdim was saying. “identify and teach how to solve the problem instead of just solving the problem”. In one analogy, you’re still dependent on others. In the other, you understand enough of the why & how to address it yourself in the future should similar occur.
Can you help me understand your problem a bit?
Am i correct, the issue you have is your (remote) Alexa cannot speak to your (home) QNAP or have I misunderstood?
@ChuckPa
You are right, I can access and watch all of my movies via Xbox one but when I ask Alexa to tell me what’s on Deck, she says I need to activate the remote access to Plex.
I also can access my archive via my mobile outside the home network ( Indirect access) but when I go to setting this is what I get.

This is also a screen shot of my Upnp status in my router.
Good… I thought that’s what you meant.
I was just reviewing this support document. https://support.plex.tv/articles/115000320808-getting-started-with-alexa-voice-control/
It speaks directly to
- Link to account
- Enable Remote Access (or relay – which activates if direct Remote Access isn’t working)
- Select the desired Plex server
Have you gone through these steps? If so, where does it fall apart?
Yes, I did, I also have another PC on another network and Alexa is fine to connect to that one via the remote access , it’s just my Plex on Qnap has remote access issues.
As a preparatory question, I will need to know about your QNAP and networking configuration otherwise I may not make any sense.
- QNAP model?
- How many of the ethernet adapters are in use?
- Is PMS running using the native QNAP app or is it in a container?
- Are you running any other containers on the QNAP?
Alexa is giving me the option to choose the server by giving her the server number and when I choose this one it says she can’t access it due to remote access is not enabled.
QNAP model? TS-453 Pro
How many of the ethernet adapters are in use? Not sure what you mean, but the Qnap connected directly to the modem via an ethernet cord.
Is PMS running using the native QNAP app or is it in a container? Not sure what a container is but I’ve downloaded the Plex through the Qnap application store.
Are you running any other containers on the QNAP? If container means any App outside the store, I’ve installed Kodi, using outside source and package.
Thanks.
By containers, I meant Docker. You’re using the app from the app store so that’s good. You’re running on QTS directly.
Ethernet adapters… aka ethernet cables connected? Sounds like you have only one connected. Again, good.
I looked in the QNAP app center and see PMS 1.10.0 . Is this what you have? I will presume you do. If you have older, I recommend you download the up to date version from http://plex.tv/downloads and manually install on top of what you have (don’t remove else you’re lose your existing metadata and configuration for Plex)
Your UPNP map shows PMS is connected but PMS is telling you it isn’t.
What do you get when you connect to Canyouseeme.org and test port 10241 it better say it’s open.
If not, your modem isn’t doing it’s job and we can fix that by you signing into your modem and creating it manually.
You’ll manually pick a port and forward (send) it to your QNAP’s IP. (aka. Manually Specifiy Port)
My QNAP is IP 192.168.0.21
If I were to create a manual rule in my modem, forwarding port 12345 to my QNAP it would look like:
External.ip.goes.here:12345 -> 192.168.0.21:32400 TCP
it’s mapping external IP address (your WAN IP) and that external port to the LAN IP of your QNAP and sending it to Plex’s port. It’s further stating to only do it for TCP (that’s all we need to send to Plex)
My questions to you:
- Check what Canyouseeme.org returns for your QNAP’s port (port 10241) .
- Verify for me the QNAP’s IP is 192.168.31.107
- Are you up to creating the manual port mapping since you’re adept at getting into the modem?
Thank you ChuckPA
The problem was that I have one modem and on the router, the NAS is connected through the ROUTER but I had to set a port forwarding on the modem as well, it it fixed now.
Glad you got it working… Sounds like you were in a double Nat situation.
Sorry for my less than helpful comment, hopefully you learned a thing or 2 that will help you in the future.
excellent. I’m glad it’s resolved.
