I’m coming to you because I’m struggling with the Plex server I have on my QNAP NAS.
I try to turn on the remote access, but it doesn’t seem to work, even when I specify a port that is open (tested on www.yougetsignal.com).
Sometimes, it turns green and says the remote access is working for one second, and then turn back to "Not available outside your network"
Just realized the IP I was testing was my computer’s public IP.
Indeed, my NAS Public IP ports doesn’t seem to be open. I’m trying to figure out how to open them on my NAS’s public IP
Unless you’re paying your ISP for multiple IP’s or you’re using a VPN on your computer, you will have only 1 public IP. Are you sure your NAS has its own dedicated Public IP or you’re referring to a private IP?
In order for this to work, you have to enable port forwarding on your VPN provider’s IP if they allow it. I use Torguard and they allow port forwarding configuration which I make use of and works flawlessly remotely.
If you only have a couple of devices connecting to Plex, your other option will be to setup some sort of DNS forwarder and run a client on your PC. The client on your PC will update the DNS provider whenever you’re public IP changes. On the Plex clients, you can then add a manual connection and reference that dynamic DNS name.
I have to admit I’m kindof a noob regarding all those stuff
My computer isn’t always on tho, is that an issue ?
Is the DNS forwarder something like “NoIP” ? I have a NoIP “linked” to my local NAS IP adress
NoIP client on your NAS wouldn’t work either because it will report back the VPN Public IP. So either leave your computer running 24/7 or switch VPN provider to a provider that allows port forwarding.
Yeah they are usually quick with it. To speed up response, login to your account and click on the Chat option on the bottom right to chat with a support rep. Let them know you opened a ticket and they will speed up your request. Once they grant you permissions, you can then pick a location and setup the port forwarding you need. They also limit your port as you cannot use certain ports but the advantage of this is that you also get a static shared public IP.
No you got it right. Can you try a different location by disconnecting your VPN and connecting to a different location and creating a port forwarding rule for that location and connect your VPN to that location and test again?
