Hi. I’m looking at moving to a new ISP that provides a public dynamic IP address.
Could anyone tell me if I will have trouble setting up Plex remote access with this type of IP. Will I need to request a static Ip which costs an extra $5 per month.
I have a dynamic IP from my ISP as well.
PMS will detect the changed IP address when it checks in with Plex.tv
This is done periodically so there is a small window of vulnerability (very small) where the host may not be at the last known address.
Thanks Chuck
I signed up to the new ISP but they assigned me a private IP address behind CGNat. Kind of sucks.
Its a new decision because they have run out of Public Dynamic addresses.
So I have no choice but to pay an extra $5 per month for a static ip just so I can enable remote access.
Ohh well.
Cheers
Sid
Smaller carriers are doing that. It’s unfortunate. If you ask them about their IPv6 rollout, they will still look at you with crossed eyes and ask why you want it.
Hi… im new at this so forgive me if im not typing in the right place… i have a synology with plex setup on it and it works beautifully… no complains… i even have a public ip and ive setup remote and even that works like a charm… my pickle is that i have a capped internet connection where im from … to put into perspective… Local traffic is free… and when i access my plex library from my office i find that its consuming my bandwidth … i dont really understand as in the plex remote it shows me my public ip … can someone enlighten me on that…
im fine with that part… i know about it connecting to the net for all its update and metadata… its the playing of the media that concerns me… from the office pc i use my public ip and the port address… so im presuming that the stream will be local to local right?
Ok Trumpy81… i get all you saying… and it makes perfect sense… let me try and resend the scenario… im from seychelles… My ISP gives FREE traffic that is local only… so at my home i have a public ip and my office uses the same ISP… ive done all the port setting and IP config in the Plex app on my synology… at home i enjoy plex in all its glory… no issues there… with the remote setup on plex when im going to access the media and play it will it relay it internationally (like acessing youtube) before it gets played in the office or it will be a local stream… i hope you understand this explanation…
thanks for the update about LAN and WAN… All good… it works exactly as i wanted it to be…
in the plex remote i have my public ip set and i have access to it in my office. ive accessed my whole library via the public ip and port address that Plex has given me in my plex app and it works and doesnt use my bandwidth…
i had a movie running for the past 30 mins and i was monitoring my usage from home and it didnt change…
its like when i access my NVR from home and it doesnt use my bandwidth cause it all local traffic
when i mean local traffic and international i mean like when i access website like cnn and youtube and everyother website… this is counted on my bandwidth cap allocation… but when i access website and content based in the country (my country… seychelles) all of that is free… it doesnt get counted on cap allowance…
