Plex remote connection with Asus RT-AC66U Router and Cablemodem in front of it

Hi i have a problem with remote access to my plex server from the internet I have a cablemodem from my provider and no access to configure it to bridge mode. Ip of the Cable Modem is 192.168.0.1 , My Asus rt-ac66u has the ip 192.168.1.1 and the wan ip in the asus web app shows 192.168.0.10

My DS918+ with Plex has the IP 192.168.1.124 .

How du i configure remote access to my Plex Server?

You have a Double NAT (double Network Address Translation).

Your WAN IP -> 192.168.0.x -> 192.168.1.x

PMS cannot negotiate it’s way through that automatically.

You must disable the routing function in one of them (aka… Bridge mode) or simply remove one.

Hi Chuck,

thanks for your fast answer.

Hello,

luckily i found user/password combination for my isps modem/router. But switching the device to bridge mode is disabled in the firmware.

But i can configure Port Forwarding…

Internal IP of my ISPS Modem/Router 192.168.0.1 , IP of my ASUS Router 192.168.1.1 , IP of my DS918+ with Plex 192.168.1.124 , WAN IP displayed in the asus router 192.168.0.10

The Portforwarding Section in the ISPs Modem/Router shows this:

Port Forwarding
Internal External
IP Address Start Port End Port IP Address Start Port End Port Protocol Description Enabled

Any help?
Thanks,
Marcus

You might be able to call your isp and ask them to enable bridge mode within your modem. I had to do this with my time Warner business account some time ago so I could access my business computers from the outside world.

If i put the asus to bridge mode than all my other network devices need to change to the 192.168.0.x network and i have to change all port forwarding rules. Besides that the options in this Technicolor 7230 from the ISP are very bad.

Hi, I know its quite an old thread, but I got the same issues with the 7230.
You found a solution?
thanks in advance

Simply stated,

You cannot have two routers, including your ISP’s modem/router, and both of them having the routing functions turned on. This is called “Double NAT” (the network address is translated twice). PMS cannot navigate through this by itself. While it can be handled, it requires manual configuration of both routers. All the IP addresses and ports must be mapped by hand. Port forwarding, which PMS needs for remote access, will be then configured to pass the requests from one router to the next in the chain eventually ending up at PMS. It looks like this:

WAN IP - ISP Modem/router - Your router - Your PMS computer
(77.88.99.101) <> (192.168.1.1) <> (192.168.1.2) <> (10.0.0.1) - 10.0.0.3

See how the IP address is changed twice? All this has to be handled.

The alternative is to put one of the two routers in Bridge mode (turns the translation functionality off). Now it’s more normal and PMS can navigate through one layer by itself. The ISP usually doesn’t allow you to turn of the routing functions so the internal one (ASUS) will need be changed into a WIFI AP-only
