Server Version#: 1.30.2.6563
Player Version#: Not sure, latest Firestick version
Using PMS on a windows server PC, FX8350 processor and gigabit fibre on gigabit LAN.
Trying to watch remotely on Firestick, Wi-Fi with 25MBPS Speedtest.
Despite the connection speeds on both ends, I’m maxing out at 1-2 MBPS stream. It’s direct streaming, so no transcode issues.
The speed seems to spike momentarily, then throttle. Is it possible my ISP is throttling my server? I’ve forced secure connections and changed the server port. It is a direct connection as relay is disabled in settings.
It’s too bad, remote streaming is now basically useless. 2mbps forces terrible quality!
When it comes to remote access and the mentioned 2 Mbps bandwidth limit, there’s two common scenarios:
While your home networks might have a 25 Mbps internet connection, this might just be the download speed. When it comes to accessing your server remotely, that bandwidth doesn’t matter all that much but instead it’s about your internet upload speed (which can be significantly slower)… 25 Mbps down with 2 Mbps up isn’t all that uncommon
there might still be a problem with your remote access setup causing the stream to use an indirect connection (using a Plex Relay server instead → those relayed/indirect connections are limited to 1Mbps; 2 Mbps for Plex Pass members). This „indirect“ is different from direct vs. transcoded playback.
While remotely streaming from your server you should be able to see the current streaming mode (local/remote/indirect) on the server dashboard’s „now playing“ section
Upload speed is 1 gigabit - it’s a fibre connection that has 1 gigabit up and down;
I’ve disabled indirect / relay in Plex settings, so it can’t be a relay issue.
I’ve also had some strange inconsistencies. Occasionally it will work great, very fast and able to play no problem with a large buffer (indicated by the darker line in the playback bar). This is only very rarely, the rest of the time it’s stuck around 2mbps despite the slowest end of the connection being capable of 25mbps…
Sooo…. Nothing? How does one open an actual support ticket here? Been a Plex pass subscriber for many years. This problem affects Plex and Plex only. I can stream the exact same content through Paramount+ with no problem whatsoever. This is a Plex issue. How can I get support to try and chase down why Plex is the only app affected?
It’s quite simple. Gigabit upload on the server, 25mbps down on the client connection. Something is throttling or bottlenecking on the server end, capping its speed at less than 2mbps. It’s not relay.
It could be something to do with my router. I’m port forwarded, and have no problems getting a connection with remote access. It simply chokes once I attempt to stream something.
Are there any router settings that could cause this? Is there a known Plex bug? Something is wrong, and I’d like the Plex support team to actually acknowledge that I need support here and try to help. Otherwise my long time subscription to Plex pass may come to an end….
In order to rule out my ISP throttling my server, is there a way I can make my server remote accessible while on a VPN? As soon as I connect my server to VPN, I lose remote access.
I want to test this because it seems like there may be a time factor. In the evening before 10pm it doesn’t work, but after 10pm it seems to magically start streaming again. It’s almost like my ISP is throttling me during peak hours.
It would really help if I could get my Plex server working behind a VPN to test this theory out….
I might be having a similar issue with many people that use my server. I have a 1 gigabit upload connection but many of them with hardware capable of direct play like the 2021 Apple TV 4K with a hardwire connection and a 300 Mbps download speed with frequently and randomly have issues with playing from my server without the connection dropping completely or stuttering/buffering.
