ExoPlayer is open source. This made me wonder if the Android developer at Plex have tried to track down the bug, but couldn’t or if they didn’t even try.
Sad face, just bought the Chromecast google TV for second device in the house (first is shield) as I enjoy the android TV plex experience. No longer. Happens on every next episode for me too. Looking forward to some good news but from the start date of this thread 'tis not looking good. Google are an unwieldy behemoth and support here seems apathetic apart from a brief flurry some months ago.
As I previously noted it took months of complaints before Plex actually gave it serious attention. Now we’re waiting on Google? Providing an updated interface for these crashes doesn’t help much.
I’ve given all the useful info I can on github and offered to reproduce if needed and provide any required data.
Nobody from google has even confirmed they can reproduce the issue as described in this thread. The github issue is stuttering with HEVC and a soundbar.
However, this thread is zoomed in playback after next episode, then crash on exit. The soundbar and HEVC seem like factors but the core issue isn’t mentioned in the github issue.
Concerning, considering the time elapsed, both here and on the github issue.
Doesn’t Emby use ExoPlayer too? The exact same files that are being distorted/crashing Plex are playing without any issues on Emby for me. I’ve subscribed to Premiere and am giving up on Plex ¯_(ツ)_/¯
This is something I’ve wondered. If another app that uses ExoPlayer on GoogleTV has the same issues. Unfortunately, I can’t find which version of ExoPlayer Emby uses. If it does actually use a version which has the issue in Plex, then we have confirmed that the Plex devs can in fact fix this fault. The only thing is that Emby have confirmed they use a “heavily modified” version of ExoPlayer to enable direct play as much as possible.
EDIT: I’ve managed to find that the last time EMBY mentioned updating their ExoPlayer was in the release notes for version 1.8.54. This appears to have been released on or before 23rd of November 2020. The latest release of ExoPlayer at that time was version 2.12.1. This is 4 releases before the version that started causing the problem in Plex (2.13.1). This means that EMBY doesn’t have the fault, but it also isn’t using the version that has the fault. Still no closer to a solution I’m afraid.
I can confirm the issue is not happening with Emby on the Google Chrome Cast…but using Plex with a .265 file, jumping to the next episode will make it crash every single time.
So then the question is, what is Plex doing different?
EMBY uses v2.12.1 of ExoPlayer.
Plex uses a version which is newer than 2.13.1.
The fault appeared in v2.13.1.
Got it thank you. That was simple and right to the point!
Just want to add to the pile of also having the same issue.
- Chromecast with google tv directly to tv, using TV as only source for sound.
- No bluetooth speakers or additional sound systems attached.
- Sample of media: Codec HEVC,Bitrate 611 kbps, container: MKV, Sound- Codec: AAC Channels: 2 Bitrate:128 kbps Audio Channel Layout: stereo
- Playing a TV series (x265) and shortly after playing next episode, the video is zoomed and stretched out, trying to move forward and back on the video doesn’t change the zoomed in issue. Hitting back or home on chromecast causes the chromecast to go to a black screen (presumably it’s crashing at this time), causing the chromecast to shutoff because my TV goes back to it’s default screen, then switches back to chromecast booting up (I see the boot screen for it).
Will test with a x264 series.
It does not happen with x264 series for me. Only with x265
Which version of the app was last working?
v8.15.2 is the latest version without the hevc bug. You will have to disable autoupdate in the GoogleTV settings.
I can’t believe we still don’t have an answer for this. I bought and paid for GTV device and Plex because I saw it as an amazing combination with video playlists. I use this set up almost exclusively and had to default back to using my Chromecast which works, but doesn’t provide what I was looking for in terms of experience.
Same issue as everyone else, I start a TV playlist I created and after the first episode plays the next one starts and kills my GTV device and fully resets the system. It is beyond frustrating we’re still waiting on a resolution. I really would love to use Plex for it’s full features on Google TV.
Can confirm v8.15.2.24006 works.
Glad to see I’m not the only person that finds this utterly ridiculous (make sure to take a look back at the 1st post date to see how long we’ve been dealing with it). Wish Plex would show some actual shame here even where the root cause may be Google-related.
I’d recommend upvoting the GitHub reported issue to get more attention from Google, currently it only has 8 upvotes:
If you don’t already have an account, you will need to create one which is free. You don’t have to be a developer to create an account and chime in on the issue.
How do you upvote?
