Yeah when I posted this I did not think it would blow up the way it did, but I’ve since moved on to using my Roku anytime I want to watch a TV show.

Yep I brought another Shield. Mind you since moving from Kodi, I do find Plex a bit more unstable then Kodi. Random crashes when you enable subtitles, etc.

Woohoo! From the GitHub page …

I very rarely ever have issues on my shield and they’re typically directly related to live tv. Also, this whole application is based on Kodi (it was originally a fork), so it’s core is probably still very close to that of Kodi.

Not anymore: Is Plex Media Player based on Kodi/XBMC? | Plex Support

Unsure if this has been reported already here but this “next video stretching” also occurs on the ONN 4k box (same SoC) but doesn’t crash.

Same issue here. Drives me nuts.

Same here.

Using a specific 4K video (4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR)) and trying different sound versions gives me reboots as well. Very annoying.

i just bought a GGTwCC spefically to play x265 media with plex.
what a surprise when the device rebooted after putting sub on a video, and see that the issue is still not resolved after 6 month…

Same here GGTwCC restarting after selecting subtitles or changing audio,:pensive:

I have been checking out Jellyfin more seriously. The same files that crash Plex on GGTwCC work in Jellyfin. I think it might be due to the versions of the video player and the ability to use vlc as a backend player.

It might be a good data point to figure out how the same files work on Jellyfin vs Plex.

I’ve spent some time reviewing general problem reports for the CCWGTV. Where we are all focused on the crappy experience it provides lately for Plex other popular apps (including YouTube TV) are experiencing regular poor performance and crashes.

I stand by my repeated criticism of Plex for largely ignoring this issue for months as the volume of complaints grew but it’s clear that the device has some major flaws. Large companies like Google don’t pay attention until they have to deal with a class action and maybe it’s time here.

The problem isn’t about the ability to play HEVC files, Plex does that just fine. The problem is that the mechanism that is meant to play the following HEVC files breaks the system. This fault only began with version 2.13.1 of Exoplayer. EMBY has no problem but uses an earlier version of ExoPlayer.
Interestingly, JellyFin uses v2.14+ (according to their v2.3.0 release notes) and doesn’t appear to have the same problems. The difference though is that they may not use the same functions to “continue” following episodes. GitHub notes from this same version also stated that they were having problems with ExoPlayer and had defaulted to using the Web player to display content.

This is why I focused on Google in my earlier response (despite the general Plex negligence here). As noted in an earlier reply The ONN 4k device which uses the same SOC (and is way cheaper btw) at least doesn’t crash in this case. The only difference here is in the firmware

I also have this issue on 2x TVs with CCwGTV, which reared it’s ugly head after I converted my entire library to HEVC with Tdarr. Can you imagine my frustration? I can’t believe this is unfixed since June…

Also FYI I just installed Plex 8.11.0.22186 (arm-v7a) on both Chromecasts and they’re working flawlessly now. Also make sure to disable auto updates in play store until they (if they??..) fix it.

Please stop commenting on the ExoPlayer issue on GitHub with other comments that don’t assist with the investigation of the issue, nor contribute any additional technical information. It just adds noise and is not helpful for those working on the issue.

Umm, IS anyone working on the issue??? Is this an update for us???

As I said up further, “v8.15.2 is the latest version without the hevc bug”.
