Plex running correctly on iOS but not on Imac

Hello I am relatively new to Plex it was all running okay on all my devices and then I updated to Version 1.18.4.2171 and it stopped working correctly, after reading in the forums I went into my Synology Nas was and I edited the permissions, it then started working properly but since then it has been hit and miss as there was no media showing in the Sonos app now after trying re downloading and reinstalling the nas is not in my authorised devices on my mac at all but all the files play through my iPhone and iPad I am signed in in all my devices and have both the media server and Plex version 10.13 High Sierra or later (64-bit only).1.4.1.940-574c2**

I am still unsure if i need Plex and the media server both running at the same time and if both these programs need to be in the applications folder which they are not, when i download the 2 programs they are zip files and I only seem to be downloading a package with no obvious installation files which may be the problem, Plex is running on my Nas but if i click open it says the server id unreachable!!

I am Tearing my hair out here ,does anyone have any ideas please ?

What you’ve described sounds very confusing to me.

For what you’ve wrote, I understood, you have a Synology NAS with Plex Media Server (PMS) installed.

Also a PMS on your Mac? (If true, its not necessary, use only 1 PMS)

Plex Media Player (PMP) for Mac has no install routine. Just extract the App from the Zip and move or Copy PMP to the Application folder and start it from there.
Don’t start Applications from within a Zip or Downloads folder. It might work well, but its not the Apple way…

You mention Sonos, so you’re trying to listen zu music via DLNA (configured in the Server settings of PMS) ? Or, do you just want to play music from the NAS via Plex to the Sonos speakers?

Please take some time and clarify.

What do you want to achieve?
What is your exact setting?

Example:
I have installed program X on device Y.
If I press button Z on program X (which is on device Y) BBB happens, but I expect AAA to happen.

That way, we can be of more help.

Hi thanks very much for your reply sorry if what i put was unclear i have got confused yes I have a Synology nas with the Plex media server 2020/01/06 installed and PMS 1.184 also in the apps folder on my Mac I just want to play music from the Plex desktop from the iMac or my iOS devices through various Sonos speakers

All that was in my applications folder on the imac was that media server so I gather I don’t need this & just the plex app in there instead I have just tried this & now I have 1.4.1 running on its own instead but now but it doesn’t recognise the mac either !!! This is also the case if i open it straight through the installed package on my nas I am obviously doing something wrong Please advise Thanks Barry

on my Mac I installed Plex for Mac, which is the player.
on my NAS I installed Plex Media Server. The NAS has IP address 192.168.1.100.

On the Mac, I open Safari and surf to the plex.tv website where I log in using the buttons in the upper right hand corner. The sign in button then changes to a Launch button. Go ahead and press the Launch button and it will try to connect to your NAS if it knows about it.

Doing so takes you to https://app.plex.tv/desktop
You should also be able to get the same thing using your local NAS address.
In my case because my NAS and PMS server is at 192.168.1.100, I would use
https://192.168.1.100:32400/web

Let us know if those types of connections work, browser connections, which would prove several things about logins and your server. If all that stuff works, you should be able to open Plex for Mac and it should also work.

**Hi Nibbles thanks for your input, so on the Mac, I opened Safari went to the plex.tv (which i didn’t know existed) and the page opened and connected to my nas then I retried and it didn’t connect I have tried a few times and sometimes it does and other times it doesn’t I then opened the Plex for mac app does this have to be running to connect to it through through a webpage and is the best way to connect to the nas ?Currently it is working well and I am connected to the Nas through that but I now notice its not connected to my iMac library instead although it is listed in my authorised devices (it was always the other way round before)

The other thing is none of the music is showing up in plex on sonos which it was before and although it says its playing through the Sonos speakers its not could this be linked to the same problem?

Many Thanks

That would indicate some networking weirdness. By following up that test with a direct connection to your local NAS IP address as I showed above, you would test a more direct route. I’ll try to explain.

Plex is built on you installing one server somewhere on your LAN.
Plex keeps track of who owns the server and who accesses it by having you create a login at Plex.tv. That account then claims the server you installed on your LAN. Then you add libraries of media to it.

The Plex Media Server (PMS) can be administered by and play media to multiple types of client players. One type is within a web browser. One type is the stand alone Plex for Mac app. One type is the app you download into your Apple TV4k. One type of player gets put on Chromecast.

So there are many players.

The most important two players are the ones your first encounter when setting up your PMS. Those are both web based players. Here are the two and what we call them:

  1. Bundled App - https://192.168.1.100:32400/web gets you the web player bundled into every PMS server download. Ofc you would have to use the correct IP address of your server, not the example 1.100 I used.
  2. Plex Web App - https://app.plex.tv/desktop gets you the latest web player but from online via Plex and not through your server’s stored version of it.

Being able to connect and administer your PMS on your NAS with those is important. It all starts by you logging into the Plex.tv website, which makes opening up those two much easier (as you will already by authenticated).

Connecting with the Plex for Mac app is really good, but it’s a newer app. The web app is more mature and capable. Being logged into Plex.tv in safari makes things easier for all local players.

Did you make two PMS servers that you authorized, one on the NAS and one on the MAC? If so you can remove the one on the Mac and put your media on the NAS as I would expect you intended to do. That way the media safely lives within the scope of the NAS’s control, and doesn’t unexpected go offline and mess things up.

Does that help?

Hi Nibbles thanks again for your input I logged out all my devices stopped the server on the nas and when i restarted and logged back in I am now able to see the nas in the plex for mac app and if i click open from the media server in the nas, however when i log into https://app.plex.tv/desktop on safari it says its Unable to connect to “nas” securely though I can load it as an insecure connection, could this be because my nas is not classed as secure in its url ? Many Thanks

I think you just have to tell safari that it’s a known site and to allow encrypted connections. In the last year the maintainers of the Internet standards increased the restrictions on secure connections, and your browser will complain if the entire chain of authority isn’t verified starting at the root servers down to your PMS. Because you’re not paying for your PMS to be verified with a FQDN, you simply have to register an exception in Safari.

As you’re using Synology, go ahead and check out the FAQ I linked below, and in the future, when you make a new topic, tag it with server-synology because we have a guru here who watches for that. Your NAS has a few tricks that he’s covered well. So this might be useful:
