Plex says it's not reachable outside my network, yet I can still access it externally

Server Version#: 1.40.4.8679
Player Version#: Any

As the title says, I click to enable remote access and plex returns the message “Not available outside your network” and “Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.”

However, anyone that has access to my server can still access and play media. I can also disconnect from my wifi on my phone and play media. While I am ok with this, I am trying to understand it as no ports are open and the server claims it isn’t accessible externally. Any ideas why this is working or if it is bugged?

Plex has a free, slow relay service which will make a server available even if a direct connection is not possible. If client speeds are limited to 2 Mbps that is what is happening.

Have you reviewed the basic documentation?

  1. Modem/Router has UPNP available and it’s enabled
  2. Your Plex server, if running a firewall on the computer itself, allows port 32400/TCP ?
