PLEX Server Crashes After Moving Database to USB SSD

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Player Version#: 4.77.3

It is well known that when Android 11 was allowed to run on Nvidia Shield Pro that two big problems were introduced. (1) The PMS simply would not run, which has been fixed, and (2) If migrating the PMS database to an external drive, the PMS would not run, which I believe has not been fixed. I have three Shield Pros, one being experimental. I have not tried lately to migrate the PMS database to my Samsung SSD, but the last time I did try the storage issue was still not fixed. Is their a way to track this issue? Or is my information incorrect and the problem IS fixed? Or is their no plan to fix this? Currently I am having to split my PMS content between two Shield Pro’s because my combined database size is > 12G, the size of internal storage on the Shield Pro. Any information on this is greatly appreciated.

STILL nothing on this??? WOW! The latest from me is that I applied for Shield Pro hotfixes and applied all of them. Then I tried AGAIN to move the PMS database to the SSD drive and it ran for a day or two and then crashed again. I cannot believe that there are not more people upset about this. My PMS libraries need far more storage than the internal storage and I assume that others are in the same boat? PLEX are you working this issue???

Suspect you may have an answer to this now, but just to let you know i have a shield pro with the latest nvidia shield experience hotfix and plex beta and am able to use an ssd for the database.

That said i have had problems with the database being easily corrupted (see latest post), however it is working on an external ssd and runs for days (even weeks) at a time. My problem has been that occasionaly playing media has caused plex to crash and if im unlucky when the shield pro starts in will corrupt the database and destroy plex ofr me.

Havent found a solution yet, other than frustration and my second factory reset. However angry as i am I’m hoping for an update.

Thanks for the response jjkc29. Sounds like you experience the external db storage as I have been. It works for a while; not good enough. However, as a lifetime PLEX PASS member it is disappointing that PLEX does not respond to this issue. A “we are workign on it” might be nice. If using an external SSD for the PLEX db is no longer an option perhaps PLEX should remove the option from the PMS itself?

Earth to PLEX developers??? Is this easily reproducable issue even a concern to you? Is it not worth your attention? Any answer is better than no answer.

Hello, not sure if this can be a tempory solution for you also. But I also have a large library but it’s seems that what take a lot of place was my music library (around 10/15Go of metadatas/images).

All my media files are hosted on my Synology NAS. I have removed my music library from my ShieldTV and migrated it to a dedicated PMS on my Synology NAS. Then I set back to internal storage my ShieldTV PMS file location. The two Server are automatically detected in my clients (Shield TV, Android TV, Xbox, etc). To speed up the recovery on my Synology I have transfered the metadatas and database from my shield to my synology nas).

Thanks for the reply. Yes I split my content between THREE Nvidia Shield Pros. TOTALLY unacceptable IMHO. Today I spun up Jellyfin server. Initial impression is that it BLOWS PMS out of the water. It’s sad that PLEX cares so little about their paying customers. Their product is extremely buggy and cannot even make use of an external database device. I worked in IT for decades and have never seen anything like it, except for products that were about to die. RIP PLEX.

Which ssd do you use?

I had the exact same problem has you. The only solution I found was to buy an sdd + enclosure.

I use what is suppose to be the best and fastest SSD (Samsung) for the Shield Pro/PMS.

Update: I have updated the PMS on one of my Nvidia Shield Pro devices, and configured it to use external ssd and also use the ssd as a library source for a few TV shows. It has been one day, and I have rebooted the Shield several times. So far so good. If it runs for 10 years I might feel safe that the issue is fixed. Still moving to Jellyfin as PLEX no longer has my confidence. But to be fair I will continue to test this problem against future Android/PMS releases and will update this thread for anyone who might benefit from the information. Thanks to all for the replies.

Well, today I see the expected; PLEX has still not addressed/fixed the external database issue. As soon as I added larger libraries, the PMS failed miserably. I have asked PLEX for a refund on my PLEX PASS as they seem either inept or uninterested in fixing this bug. On to Jellyfin. Try Jellyfin, you will not be disappointed. I have yet to encounter a single bug and the user interface is a far better experience than tha PLEX. To be fair, I have not compared every feature between the two products but so far Jellyfin shines. And it’s FREE!!!
