The ONLY method I’ve ever found to fix this is a downgrade to a previous version. They cook these bugs into the updated and expect us to sort it out every time. Frustrating. I just downgraded back to 1.26 because an update (which I never authorized, btw) caused my libraries to “disappear” from the server’s sight.
Verify that you are getting database backups every 3 days.
Same problem here, very frequent random crashes on Windows 10. I noticed this May 27th for the first time. Latest update 4.76.1 did not fix it.
My server has also been crashing recently! According to the Event Log, it’s caused by ntdll.dll.
Do any Plex Support Teams actually read the Forums?
I’ve been having the same sorts of problems for the past few months as well.
I run three PLEX servers across three different locations, all vastly different hardware configurations, and all running some flavour of Windows.
All three are having these issues.
Worse is that when one crashes, I lose any customizations in-app to do with that server i.e., pinned libraries. This is supremely frustrating, especially for my very non-technical users.
Really surprised this is so widespread and PLEX still seemingly has not acknowledged the issue?
I put a script together to restart the server process.

obviously not. i even posted on one blog post and was ignored
I suggest we all post daily and increase the number of posts so maybe that will get Plex Support attention.
Plex has really gone downhill lately. I’ve lost all respect for them, I increasingly get the idea that they just don’t give a crap about their customers. They did this one other time last year where they broke all the servers. This is the last straw for me to start searching for alternatives even though I have a lifetime pass. Something big in the last year changed over at Plex. So I doubt they will care at all.
Just reporting I am dealing with the same BS.
Christ Plex devs get it together. FIX THIS!
Just joining the chorus here, this has also started happening to me on Windows 10.
Server 2019 VM w/GPU passthru hosted on ESXi 7.0U3e.
Logs are being exported to a Log Insight node elsewhere in the rack and to Log Analytics via Azure Arc. If anyone from Plex wants access, PM me.
Ok I have stayed quiet for a few months now but the issue continues. I am running four servers. Two Linux based and two windows server 19 based. Both windows servers occasionally freeze and I get the Plex server stopped working message. The Linux servers have no problems. Again this only started a few months ago.
The product has been rock solid for me over the years until now. I am getting frustrated.
Please fix this.
Just adding to the list, PMS is crashing near-daily at this point. Get a 503 when trying to load the web interface until it is restarted.
I too had several crashes a week, usually over night but some times during the day. Normally PMS would just stop responding via web and clients but the process on the server would still be “running”. It seemed like the PMS process would degrade in responsiveness via web or on a client and eventually stop responding after a while.
The last week or two its been quite a bit better. I’m currently on PMS 1.27.2.5929 (beta channel).
same here, daily deadlocks (503 Service Unavailable)
I too have had a series of crashes on latest software version, was happening once or twice a week, but now is happening once or twice a day it seems.
Same for me. I’ll downgrade to pms 1.25.9.5721 that was stable. You can use a soft like Restart on Crash but that wont fix the issue with plex.
Thanks for the tip, I recently started using plex and just ran into this annoying issue running it in Server Core 2022. I’ll try the version you suggested.
Not sure if it is a fluke or not, but I am noticing similar activity from my Win 10 server running the latest server version. I always keep a Chrome tab open to my Plex dashboard and when I try to look at Bandwidth, CPU, or RAM it has a spinning yellow circle vs the regular line graph. My Roku client says a message to the effect that my hard drive in question has been unmounted. This is not true - some are SATA connected, others are in a USB C external enclosure; all are visible and accessible from file explorer and the files play fine via VLC. Plex icon is still in the system tray, there is just no activity. Closing the Chrome tab with Plex web interface and trying to reopen it from the Plex icon in the system tray opens up a blank (white) webpage and never loads. Restarting the server has fixed it both times. Only had this issue since upgrading to 1.27.xx.xx. Has happened twice now on 7/8 and 7/14. I am not sure if the logs would be helpful, if so just let me know what I need to upload. Thanks.
Oh, and if downgrading actually fixes the issue would anyone care to provide instructions on how to do so? Thanks again in advance.
