Plex Server Crashing Randomly

Thanks! Google was not helping me find that.

It is good to hear that the 64 bit version seems to be working. I am going to hold out a bit longer because my deadlock errors have been entirely consistent by occurring every 6 days. First was on 7/8, then 7/14, and most recently on 7/20. If the pattern holds, I should have another one on 7/26. I am going to attempt to collect diagnostics again when (if) it goes down again. It is so weird that for me it is so consistent, yet with others it seems to be totally random. Perhaps this has something to do with the compiler bug that @sa2000 mentioned to me in a PM.

At the moment we do not know what is causing the lockout - and I have diagnostics from 4 users referred to the development team

Release 1.28.1 which will be beta soon will fix some crashes

The 64-bit windows release will circumvent crashes caused by high memory use

I have a lot of users who access through Plex for Sonos and stream music across our company. I noticed that Plex didn’t crash once over the weekend when there was no real activity on it. But come today, audio streaming kicks back in and I’ve had six crashes in the past five hours. Obviously seems related but not sure in what way as I’m guessing my use case isn’t that common across the other people experiencing crashes here.

Best to get debug server logs after such crash to establish if it is an actual crash or lockout and what the crash is

Since installing the 64 bit version yesterday, I have yet to have any lockouts/crashes. Plex seems noticeably more responsive overall than before. The 64 bit version is already on v1.28.1 for those that are looking for access to a beta build with crash fixes sooner.

I have had Plex for over 5 years now. Since installing the 64 bit version I have now gone the longest amount of time without any issue whatsoever. Not a single problem. And I have massive libraries with several users streaming at once while also DVR recording multiple shows and scanning libraries back to back. I have thrown everything at it.

Stable Plex is the greatest program ever. This 64 bit Plex is so nice. I just hope I am not jinxing it. I can’t express how nice it is to wake up and see my Plex is still running fine every single day.

Also, the new Live TV is awesome! Very well organized and highly responsive. My TV recording is also quicker to add to my libraries.

I am torn between installing the 64 bit version, reverting to a previous version, or setting a recurring reminder on my phone to restart the server every 5 days.

Or just sit here and wait and see if they find a fix for the issue. Which it seems like they are having a hard time nailing down. Really bummed because Plex has always been so rock solid for me for 6 years on this server.

Just got this from another user experiencing deadlocks that upgraded to the 64 bit version:

So it looks like the 64 bit version may not be the magic bullet that we are hoping it is…

Just to add to Bruce’s update…
I started a thread recently reporting my Plex server (on Windows 11 PC) keeps crashing and was notified that this could be the issue raised in this thread. Looking at my symptoms I think it is. I use Plex to access personal music and videos on a local hard drive, through Plex apps on TV and iPads. I keep losing access to these but can still access Plex supplied movies and TV, Plex is still running in the Windows system tray and can see it in the Task Manager. When I lose access to the personal data I see Messages ā€˜DESKTOP-Lowrey is currently unavailable’ and ā€˜Please verify that the server is running and has a network connection…’
Recycling the Plex server on the PC gets my personal data back but only for a short period of time, usually only for an hour or two. I tried upgrading to the 64 bit version of Plex but this has made no difference to the problem I am seeing. I will try to gather the recommended data and post it here.

I have had many blockages in the last 2 months every 2 or 3 days. A few hours ago I installed the version for 64 bits. I will give you feedback as soon as possible.

blockages = deadlocks*

@sa2000 there seems to be more and more posts about this with people creating new threads each time. Maybe you should create a fresh known issue thread and pin it to the top of server-windows with a brief explanation and the instructions you provided before about collecting diagnostics.

@sa2000 , I know that you guys seldom if ever roll back a release, but this seems like a prudent thing to do. Something in the code has been changed to cause this issue. With it being so widespread and the cause being unknown, why not revert to a stable version and have more testing to figure it out? Stability is the number one key priority in any software. I know that in my hospital software release roll outs are staged carefully as to not impact operations. If issues are found, temporary roll backs sometimes occur to make sure everything runs as expected. Not trying to tell you guys how to run your business or anything, but it really does tarnish the brand to have such a glaring problem affect so many users. Especially with a product that has really up until now been so stable. Just my two cents.

Just want to chime in and say that I am experiencing this exact same issue. Playback stops on all devices. Library inaccessible until I restart the PMS app. No crash logs because the app itself never fully crashes/closes. Happens 1-2 times a day for the last week. No noticeable pattern as to when, and not only happening during scheduled tasks.

I’m curious if others in this thread have moved their plex media server folder. My issues started shortly after I moved mine off of my C: drive, but that could be a coincidence.

Can anyone chime in with whether their PMS folder (local media, cache, etc) is on their C: drive, or if they’ve moved it to another drive at some point?

FWIW, I’ve haven’t touched my Plex files, they’re still on the c:\ drive. It’s been running flawlessly for several years now on the machine with no changes. I hadn’t even rebooted for over 2 months when I started having this issue.

you can add me to the list of users having the same deadlock issue… im on the latest version as well and plex server locks up daily for me.

i just started the day, checked plex and my libraries werent available… quit plex server, restarted and its back online.
so plex server locked up overnight at some point for me.

cheers,

@rwoffice @brucestephensrx - In 1.28.1 we have fixed or rather got round a Microsoft compiler issue that could lead to crashes and deadlocks. It may not be the answer to all lockouts but I was hoping it would resolve the one affecting most users.

I would like to pursue that and see what the outcome is. I know there was a reported issue with the alpha install but re-installing the alpha and doing a repair fixed that.

So I would like to give 1.28.1 a chance and then see if we still get lockouts and to get diagnostics from that.

I am making 1.28.1 alpha available to users who provided me evidence of a lockout / deadlock plus crashes that are known to have been fixed by the changes for the compiler bug I mentioned. 1.28.1 is also available in the forum preview release of the new 64-bit windows build here Preview: Plex Media Server for Windows 64-bit version
