plex server doesn't work, cannot be discovered, on QNAP TVS-451+ (maxxed out config)

Hi,

I have been trolling the forums looking for a way to solve two issues:

1 - Plex media server no longer appears in the browser, or any 3rd party devices (phones, ChromeCast, Alexa, AppleTV, iPads, etc.)

2 - When it does work, Alexa doesn’t play songs or music. Always responds with “playing library…” but no audio. No ability to select/play individual songs, albums, artists or play lists.

I’m a Plex Pass subscriber… is there no way to get chat or phone support?

I can’t understand why this isn’t an option for people who pay to use the service.

Wow. It’s been a week and no response from Plex or other members.

Wow.

The value proposition of Plex has just gone down the toilet for me.

No way I can use a paid for service with no support.

Guess I’ll have to figure out another solution.

Shawn,
I don’t usually patrol here but did just see your post. Sorry you didn’t get support in a timely manner.

I can help you get PMS running again. I can’t help you with the Alexa integration but I can get someone who does know how to resolve the problem.

To figure out with your QNAP.

  1. If you open the resource monitor and look at the processes which are running. Is Plex running?
  2. If Plex is running and it’s on your same subnet, you can’t a. sign your web browser out of plex b. open http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web
  3. If it doesn’t respond with the signin page, let me know and show me what you have with a screenshot.

I am having the same problem. Plex is discoverable on my Samsung TV only, and I am able to watch videos. I tried the web browser trick above with no luck. On my Mac (the app and logging on to the QNAP 453 via the Mac) or on my iPad, the Plex server is not discoverable. For the last few weeks, my apps on the map and iPad have had problems discovering the server, but it has never been this bad.

To figure this out, always start with listing what’s in common and what’s different about it versus everything else because if one works, all should be working. Therefore:

  1. Wired versus Wifi?
  2. If all are Wifi, all on the same SSID?
  3. If all are wired, all on the same subnet?

ChuckPA, it’s a WiFi set up. As far as I can tell, all are on the same SSID. When it comes to networking issues, I am only slightly more knowledgable than a turtle.

Ok… then lets walk through it.

  1. Each device can get to the internet?
  2. If you go into the actual network settings for each device, Look at the SSID and look at the IP address assigned. The first 3 fields of the address should be the same, e.g. 10.0.0.x or 192.168.1.x or similar pattern. If you see different ones, you found the root problem
