QNAP Plex Media Server - Server not found?

Hello Guys,

since some month I´m looking for a solution getting my Plex Server running.
I have a QNAP TS-451 (OS 4.3.4.0551) (Intel Dual Core 2.4 GHz) and reinitialized it complettly on April this year. I setup a new NAS configuration and I also installed the Plex Media Server 64 Bit Version 1.12.0.829 you can download direktly from the QNAP download center.

But when I opening the Plex GUI the server can´t be found or configured.

Screenshot attached:

The sentense “Suche nach Server” means “Searching for Server”.

I spend a lot of hours and tried several solutions I found in the web on differend forum´s.
I also tried the solution steps from Plex itself but it doesn´t helped me further.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/204604227-why-can-t-the-plex-app-find-or-connect-to-my-plex-media-server/

I created a second Plex Account and used him for the PMS login to be shure that nothing is wrong with my primary account but it hasen´t helped.

After the reinitialisation I did not install many software or apps. I only installed Plex Media Server and Malware Removal Tool. So I´m talking about a very fresh and clarity system.

I used my Plex server in the passed with OS 4.2. very well but now I don´t know whats wrong with my system?

If anybody have a hot tip for me that would be very nice.
Thanks and greetings Mr_NoGood

There is no need for anything exotic (like qnapclub) to get PMS running anymore.

  1. Download PMS from www.plex.tv/downloads for your model
  2. Manually install in App Center
  3. Open http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web in your browser. (Notice http not https:)
  4. You will be greeted with the startup, setup, and welcome screens

Hi ChuckPa, thank´s a lot but it doesn´t.
I have no problem having access the Plex GUI.
I know the problem between HTTP and the wrong HTTPS link.
The URL I´m using is http://qnap:32400/web/index.html#
As you can see in the screenshot I´m on the Plex Webside.

Normally you could see the server settings on the left where you can edit the directory path for your movies etc…
But without a server there are no settings?

Are you sure PMS is even running? It looks like it isn’t.

What does Resource Monitor -> Processes show? Do you see Plex ?

I’m having the same issue as well…

Please install Create a share for Plex Library Directory (written by Dane22)

It will let you get direct access to the Logs directory (to make a ZIP of for uploading) directly in FileStation.

Please create the Logs manually and upload the ZIP.

We can start diagnosing from there.

For your help thanks a lot in advanced
Greetings Mr_NoGood

THanks for the logs. Had you previously wiped the logs before starting PMS? I had hoped to see the previous instance (startup) logs here.

What I do find is that it looks like you have a domain / host setup which isn’t recognized and blocking because it’s not getting an IP

Jul 04, 2018 18:30:22.098 [0x7f1c47111700] DEBUG - Request came in with unrecognized domain / IP 'qnap' in header Host; treating as non-local

Let’s do this:

  1. Stop PMS
  2. Through the pms share in FileStation, delete Preferences.xml
  3. Start PMS
  4. Open the http (not https) address of the QNAP. (it’s not yet claimed and doesn’t speak https). If you’re not local to it (same subnet), we’ll have to use direct SSH-tunnel. We can’t use QNAP’s remote tools either. They are insufficient.
  5. You’ll be greeted by the welcome, sign-in, and ‘Got it’ sequences to setup a new server
  6. Continue into as if you are creating a new server however do not create any library sections. SKIP this
  7. Continue through normally until arriving at the Dashboard.
  8. You’ll find your existing library sections waiting for you.
  9. Settings - Server and check everything. Some will have been cleared during this ‘soft reset’ we just performed.

Hey ChuckPA,

we fixed it. You shown me the problem with the unrecognized domain!

I´ll explain it in more detail:

I have a local router with a DNS-Server and added a entry in the past for the name “qnap” that resolve to the local IP 192.168.20.200.

So you had only to type qnap in your browser to reach the QNAP webinterface.
If you now use the Plex link in your QNAP webinterface a new tab will open with the following URL:

Works not ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------
http://qnap:32400/web/index.html#

And that is the problem. I don´t know exactly why but it is.
You could see the Plex Web GUI but not the server / settings!

Works -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So if you replace the resolvable name “qnap” with the local IP the dashboard works fine and you can configure your PMS as you wish.

http://192.168.20.200:32400/web/index.html#

For those how have the same problem, please use the IP from your QNAP not my. ; )

It´s a bad trap, because the network and QNAP was configured right and you could see the Plex GUI but the server wasn´t found.

Anyway, we made it. Thanks a lot ChuckPA, you are the man of the day. ; )

Maybe I should teach you how to setup a DNS server like I have on my pfSense box? I even have a .lan local domain and it all works out perfectly

I’m having a similar issue where everything looks fine in qnap and i’ve had no updates but suddenly it acts like the media server has stopped broadcasting. It was working as recent as yesterday.

I can run the plex web app interface from the same ip as my server but it doesn’t find the media server on that same ip. I’m accessing by IP and not any custom DNS name. I can detect Plex Cloud and my friends Plex Media Servers my account has access to. Also the “missing” qnap plex server is shown in settings>servers>devices.

I can see the PMS processes but they say “Sleeping” …is that the problem? if so how would i get it to initialize and run? I’ve reset the qnap and verified i’m running the latest PMS from the qnap app store.
