PLEX Server Down.! WIN 10 Update KB4343909 (14 AUG18)

:biohazard: Win10 KB4343909 (OS Build 17134.228) (14 AUG18)

:warning: 14 hrs ago Windows 10 updated to KB4343909 (OS Build 17134.228) with the Spectre fix tweak and other '“improvements”

I Had previously disabled auto updating. But obviously not adequately for Win10.

  • I am still assessing the damage but It has ‘trashed/changed’ many functions and settings inc PLEX.

  • MY main issue ATM is my 24TB Plex Media Server will not run.

  • Plex Media server is displayed in processes but none of the other asociated processes seem to be loading for it to start the server.

  • There are no Screen Error Messages. However, there are many Event Viewer SYSTEM entries;
Log Name: System Source: Service Control Manager
Description: A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Plex Update Service service to connect. I am still sifting through event logs for clues.

  • I have restarted - Repaired - Un/Re-installed PLEX SERVER Several times without sucess.

  • I am unable to Rollback the KB4343909 update and [Uninstal Updates] does not display it as an ‘Uninstalable Update’.

  • Windows refuses to enact the restore points for the Update Installation.

  • FYI, I neglected to secure a recent System Image to back up from… DOH.!

I need your help. Ideas any one.?

  • I have also had a PLEX issue with this Win 10 Update.
  • The KB4343909 Worked for me.

This is probably CPU-specific code.
It would be beneficial to know which type of CPU is in your server.

I had no issues after applying the update. CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 @3.4 GHz

:white_check_mark: OK (Answering my own call for help) SOLUTION.

I used Revo Uninstaller to collect all the registry entries associated with PLEX.
It’s a lot.!

I didnt know what exactly I was looking for but noticed a missing association to The PLEX Data and Library Meta Data folder which I run from a dedicated SSD to increase the response time when browsing as the DB is 150GB and growing.

I forced a reassociation with the drive and Hey Presto - Back to normal.

System logs still show the KB4343909 update and PLEX outage with the same time stamp.

From a PLEX DEV point of view it would have been very useful to get error messages from Plex Server .exe That could have saved me 8 - 10 hours trouble shooting.

So.? What Have I learned.?

  • Re schedule OS image Backups.
  • Completely lockdown WIN 10 UPDATES using Britec Computers method on Youtu.be
  • And Hope someone at PLEX DEV reads this and codes a few GUI Error reporting routines into the next roud of updates.
  • As for Microsoft… Well, I should know better.

**Thanks for the reply. **
I have an i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz

I was very scared it was CPU based. All I can say for sure now is a lot of system settings were changed at a registry level by the MS Update interaction with my servers applications. Maybe I was just unlucky this time.

I still have some work ahead of me still restoring windows system configurations but at least PLEX is safe now.
Thanks again Otto. :hugs:

Could you explain that a little bit more in detail?

Yes sure Otto.

I was working along the line of reasoning that even uninstalling PLEX left residual files and registry entries that might be persisting and preventing a clean reinstall which could fix any issues created by system changes.

I used Revo Unistaller which has an advanced uninstall and cleanup option and can display all files folders and registry trees for manual removal. There was a more registry information remaining after uninstall compared with most software. Probably a good thing.

So I went through every registry entry with and without PLEX installed. I noticed one setting which was not pointing to my P drive:
PLEX server setting - “[The path where local application data is stored]”.

This wasnt neccesarily unusual or significant while PLEX was uninstalled But reinstalling it did not populate the entry with the default value which from memory is C:\Users* and then go on to create a fresh file structure to use.
I had up until then reinstalled (5 or 6 times).

This Is, I think why PLEX wasnt completing it’s startup.

I added the path for my SSD P:\00- PLEX DATA\ to the registry, rebooted and Boom-baby. It lit up like a Christmas tree and smiled at me as if nothing was ever wrong.

I cant give you the exact Registry position as I would have to at least start the revo uninstall process and while everything is ticking like a Swiss Clock I am staying well away from the nuts and bolts of the Server.

I hope that fills in the gaps. If there is anything I missed you’re welcome to let me know.

Kind Regards BB.

If the key LocalAppDataPath is absent, Plex will use the default location %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server

So if you removed all Plex-related registry entries, Plex should have reverted to the default location for its data.

Tip: never, ever use Revo to uninstall Plex. It will make Plex un-updateable.

Thank you Otto

Yes I understand what you mean by not using Revo. I am sorry I wasnt explicit enough though in my reply. Iv’e had little sleep this week.

I didnt infact use Revo for the uninstalls, for the same reason as you rightly pointed out.
I just took it as far as the Manual Advanced mode to view all the places there could possibly be PLEX seting data effecting a reinstall.

I stopped short of deleting any registry entries. I just observed what the PLEX Un/Installer was adding and taking away on each un/re install cycle to attempt to find some clue as to where the conflict or error might be.

To uninstall I used the plex uninstaller. However, I had intended to use Revo as a last resort if no solution could be found on the forum.

The advanced settings link looks really useful in an emergency, much much better than using Regedit. thank you.
I will brows it after I get a bit more sleep.

It just describes which keys to edit, using regedit
