Plex media server installation fails to launch windows 10 64bit

My plex media server on the PC suddenly stopped connecting online. So I uninstalled it and have been trying to reinstall, but although the installation appears to complete the “launch” button does not work. Please help.

All done already and no joy

Hi Andy,
thanks for the effort. I have successfully uninstalled plex as described, I have cleared out the debris using regedit and the done as you suggested re the appdata folder, but no matter what I try the Plex Media Server will not install at all. The setup runs and appears to complete successfully, but the “Launch” button is completely unresponsive and therefore the server cannot be started. I am at the end of tether.

Hi again,

in that case, plex is not running. there is no icon in the system tray and no background processes. in many ways that is actually the problem. repeated attempts to install produce the same result, many restarts, but no success. thanks again,

Ian

I updated Windows yesterday and now have the same symptoms; Plex will not launch. Thanks Microsoft.

@Buzzard-Plex Are you on the latest version?

@icarton when you say the “Launch” button do you mean the one after the installation is complete or the one on plex.tv?Assuming you mean the one after installation, have you tried to start “Plex Media Server” normally by searching for it. Make sure to also try running as admin and mess around with compatibility settings ( Right click Plex Media Server.exe > properties > compability tab > run in compat. dropdown menu)

Edit: take a look through this thread. https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/255721/pms-closing-immediately-after-launch

Hi, yes that is the launch button I meant. unfortunately it looks like no programme folders have been created and there are no registry entries either. it looks like the installer completes but it has not done anything that the installer is supposed to do. I know it doesn’t make much sense. Very Frustrated.

I now have the same problem with plex. It looks like there may have been a Windows 10 64-bit update that is causing the problem.

(Blem420) I assume I was on the latest version since it prompts me to update (normally) and I do the updates when they come out, but I can’t check now  The PLEX update service is still running but no PLEX. I have the exact same symptoms described in the other thread you listed, I launch PMS and I see the icon in the list but as soon as I hover over it the icon goes away. I checked my list of Windows updates and can’t find KB3216755 in my list.

Four Windows updates this week: KB890830, KB4013418, KB4013429, KB4014329. It seems that KB4013429 (OS Build 14393.953) is the issue. If you uninstall it, Plex is up and going.

Hmm, new install of the latest version and it seems to be running, how odd but I guess I will count myself lucky

I wish I could update to the new version of PLEX but it breaks Tivo Bolt and Tivo Roamio playback so until PLEX fixes the issue I can not complete the upgrade. Either way if you have windows update KB4013429 on an existing install of PLEX it will not work even when you try to repair the PLEX install.

uninstalling windows update KB4013429 has not helped, thanks again but still no idea what other approaches to try.

Hi again, I downloaded the media server installer again with the Edge browser and uninstalled the redistributable as well as deleting the cached version and restarting but sadly still no progress when I tried to reinstall the media server.

Has anyone managed to resolve this yet?? I have exactly the same problem running on Windows 10 64 bit. Just stopped working the other day after a windows update was installed. Seems like something Plex need to address. Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Same here, ran some overdue windows updates today, and now plex server won’t start. Icon comes up briefly in the tray, then disappears. Service not running. I’ll try uninstalling patch KB4013429, but certainly not going to re-install windows.

Here are the known issues for this windows patch, second one looks suspicious:

Known issues in this update

Workaround

  1. Customers using Windows Server 2016 with Switch Embedded Teaming (SET) enabled might sometimes experience a deadlock or bug check when changing the physical adapter’s link speed property.
This issue is currently being addressed and a fix will be provided when ready.
  2. Windows DVD Player (and 3rd party apps that use Microsoft MPEG-2 libraries) crashes when run.

OK, plex server restarting now after uninstalling KB4013429, but plex library looks like its corrupted…

Learnt something new tonight. Have to login to the PC running the Plex media server with the same user each time, profile stored with the user. After running the MS updates I logged in with my admin user first up, instead of the user I normally run first up. Caused by a move of the media PC from the family room to the study where we can login individually a bit easier.

All good now, just have to wait for MS to update that patch before re-installing it.

As @battlestar666 said:

…Uninstall is crawling…
…still crawling…

Ok, will post again when uninstallation is completed to report if that solved the problem.
