So I have been running Plex Media server on my shield for year. The odd issue every so often but on the whole its worked ok.
On October 9th the was an update (beta) to the server, from that date onwards the server as been as stable as a dog with one leg. The service randomly seems to just stop itself, in plex settings sometimes you dont even see the Plex server options, the heading is there but the two options (stop/start server and change directory) don’t even show. I’d start watching content, then randomly it would just network connection error. Hell id even try watching content on the shield itself and that would fail.
If I leave it alone and don’t touch it, I would check the connected and it would show Secure > Remote/Nearby. If I start playing something, it then randomly changes to indirect and no longer works. Leave it a bit longer and it then changes to Unavailable.
I left the beta program, and reinstalled PMS (tried to reinstate my backed up database, lol waste of time that was)… didn’t make a blind bit of difference. I have ruled out things like network cables, switches, routers.
So I have just turned on network logging in the PMS logging options when you do there is an overlay that says the logs are available and gives you a url… the thing is is that that IP shown. isn’t and never has been an IP in my subnet on my lan, If I connect to the actual IP on port 32500 and check the log, there are loads of network errors, trying to connect to this incorrect IP.
If I look in the Plex Media Server.1.log it list this IP address as the
p2p-wlan0-0 address, this IP seems to change all the time, if I disabled Ethernet, this IP chages, if I turn on wifi, this ip changes.
I feel this is the route cause of the problem as its trying to direct traffic to this interface and IP which isn’t valid.
What I think is happening is that its trying to use UPNP to this IP and not one of the actual interface IPs, but then it randomly uses the right IP, thats why plex works for a bit, then it changes again.
